Danny never, ever, tried to make Clara choose between him and the Doctor. It could be argued that trying to protect Clara from herself is a little patriarchal, but the reason Clara lied to him is because she felt guilty and ashamed at her inability to give up the lifestyle, not because of any threat from Danny.

If you've ever gone off the rails in your life, you are damn well going to be protective of a friend, family member, or lover that you can see going the same way. You may well assure them that it's okay to go out partying and have fun, as long as they ask for help when things go too far. And no hiding the truth. That's what Danny was, that was the analogy. Clara was addicted to risk-taking with the Doctor, and she lied to him to cover it up.

Danny was never the one with control issues.

Just to interject, I liked Danny more than I ever did Clara.

And he had the good manners to die a whole year before Clara finally kicked the bucket. Bless him.
