When the Doctor was looking for the trap street in Face the Raven he tells the little boy to "remember 82".

I have seen someone elsewhere make the connection that 1982 was the last time there was an onscreen death of a major companion (at least one that was permanent unlike Jack and without getting a happily ever after like the Ponds) when Adric died in Earthshock.

A coincidence or intentional foreshadowing? Any other show I would say the former but with Doctor Who I am leaning towards the latter.

I must say that I didn't catch the Doctor saying that, (mainly because I can't hear half the dialogue in the episodes nowadays because of the incessant music drowning it), but that's a lovely idea!
Of course it would be a nonsense in-universe for the Doctor to make a comment about the transmission date of a previous story, but it does still imply that we should be aware that he knew what was going to happen to Clara. Of course if that was the case why did he still walk into the trap and allow it to run its course, unless of course it was a "fixed point" that couldn't be changed, and may well have already happened anyway........

The 82 was more a little "gift" for the fans from the writers, rather than the Doctor actually knowing something was about to happen

I'm sure you're right.

I thought I was being fanciful when the thought crossed my mind, as I became a fan in that year. It does seem likely that it was deliberate. What a lovely nod if so.

great reference!

Well we saw Arthur Darvill's Rory and Jenna Coleman's Clara die multiple times in the last few years, so I'm not getting the 1982 reference. Seems that some people have just tried to link Adric to Clara when clearly that is not the case. Rory last died in 2012 - twice - in The Angels Take Manhattan.

Sorry, but 82 may not refer to the year.

I suddenly remembered to "remember 82" when the Doctor said he had 82 minutes to eat and sleep in the castle during Heaven Sent before the Veil would catch up with him. Guessed it was a coincidence, but it was also odd that such a specific number was stated on both occasions in consecutive episodes.

Wow, that makes a lot of sense, nice nod to the past

Nice catch. I'd love it if that turned out to be some way the Doctor was leaving clues to himself, or to other people listening, or some breadcrumb trail to lead himself back, or some other plot contrivance.

Quick Google search of other 'eighty-two' references:
In The Girl in the Fireplace, the ship suffered 82% system failure due to an ion storm.
In Robots of Sherwood, the engines are briefly at 82% before maxing out (I think) at 83%.

Nah, I got nothin'.

Yes I thought that too when he mentioned 82 again. I suspect that was deliberate but probably not that it means much. Just a little easter egg. Even if that is true I still like it.

I'd forgotten that myself. Good catch.

Clara (prime) has never died before. Rory (and Amy) ultimately died in their old age through natural causes, so that doesn't really count.

I'm sure 82 was a very small look back to Adric

Rory died in Cold Blood (2010) and was wiped by the Crack. So his death counts as the first since Adric. However he does get reanimated as an Auton and then back to human again. But his death still stands as the first since 1982. As someone has pointed out it likely refers to events in Heaven Sent. 82 is just a mere coincidence.

If Twelve is indeed referring to dead companions (i.e. those, unlike Peri and Rory, who stay permanently dead") he should have given a nod to fans of all ages by saying "Remember 65 and 82".

1965 - Katarina and Sara Kingdom killed off in "The Dalek Masterplan"

1982 - Adric killed off in "Earthshock".

Do you think Time-Flight would've been 'cheapened' if Adric had appeared in i.....hang on a minute!

ETA Difficult to know how Time-Flight could've gotten any cheaper, really. Bless it.

Is she related to Optimus (Prime) ?

Been several nice references this series. Five rounds rapid, the UNIT dating controversy, implying the 'half human' bit, couple others escaping my memory at the moment.

Jack has also died in the series 1 finale.

However none of the mentioned characters actually stayed dead. Amy and Rory being the exception. However there's a difference between getting to live out your live into your 80s while being happy and dying before you even turn 29.

Yes it would have been cheapened. When a character dies hes not in the series anymore and why should he since hes gone.

Even Teegan demanded the doctor go back to save him but he refused because of the laws of time.

This should have applied to clara.

Still not sure whether you're joking, but 'Adric' was in Time-Flight, just like 'Clara' was in Heaven Sent. For about the same length of time, too. Just not as well acted.(Sorry, Matthew!)

I don't see how that has to be true. Even the most definitively dead character can still have an impact on the main character, whether in memories or flashback or hallucination or trick. Or, you know, time travel.

I'd say it was more of a Peter Davison nod. SM's favourite Doctor.
