Times we have seen the doctor go truly "evil" onscreen ...

Saladfingers got me thinking about this with his thread about Jessica Jones. If David Tennant is indeed using the same "voice" he accented for DW then it might be like hearing an evil Tenth Doctor...which I would be fascinated by.

So it got me thinking of times we've seen a Doctor go "dark."

Troughton as Salamander? ... The Valeyard...Dreamlord...Timelord Victorious...and...Eleven in Neil Gaiman's cyberman episode...

Am I missing any?

The Doctor was possessed and proclaiming that Martha should 'burn with him' in 42. The sinister scenes in this one were brilliantly contrasted by his scenes of genuine terror - one of the few times we've seen the Doctor go 'dark' and one of the only times we've seen him so scared as well. So it wasn't directly him, but we seldom get him put in that kind of position where someone or something else is actually controlling him either, so I'd feel compelled to include it as an example.

And it remains the only Chris Chibnall episode I like at all.

TimeLord Victorious!

Perhaps not evil as such but a not very nice stage.

Mindwarp is one such occasion. I'm not sure what the fans made of it, but I quite liked seeing him as a 'bad guy' for a change.

And we've seen his evil realised in characters like the Valeyard and the Dream Lord (Amy's Choice). I'd quite like to see the Doctor battling an evil version of himself.

The Doctor's always had a bit of a dark side, which I like. We know he's fundamentally a force for good and a hero, even if he doesn't think of himself as such. (see 'The God Complex', 'Death in Heaven' etc. Even says "I am nothing." in the last episode.) The audience and the people he helps know that's cobblers, but I like that questioning, self doubting side; and the fact that he's a fallible hero who can cock things up....sometimes spectacularly, considering how saving Ashildr worked out!

Always thought his treatment of The Family of Blood was pushing it a bit. It made for some great scenes, but Joan is right that his decision to hide from them to avoid conflict had serious ramifications for the innocent. And it rather jarred for me when, a few stories later, we see the Doctor cradling and crying over a particularly barmy, cruel and perverse incarnation of The Master.

Although he's seen as one of the more amiable incarnations, Eleven could be a hard, manipulative begger on occasion. His not saving Solomon for example. "I'm the Doctor! And I save people! Well, unless they're irredeemable, genocidal, lecherous scumbags. I'll let them get blown to smithereens!"

For me, that was a real turning point for the Doctor - it wasn't that he chose not to save Solomon but that he actually killed him in a very premeditated way. It's the sort of thing you'd expect from the 12th Doctor but not the 11th.

Although it all turned out to be a clever plan, the fourh Doctor's behaviour during the first few episodes of The Invasion Of Time was presented as if he'd really, genuinely, turned bad.
And Tom was such an unpredictable character that it was actually very plausible.
I was 11 at the time and it was something of a shock, and quite a talking point in the playground on Monday mornings.

Cassandra possessing the 10th Doctor in New Earth can be another example.

The first Doctor got into a needless argument with a frenchman, was constrained as a result and escaped by whacking the same bloke over the head with a shovel. Now I know he was french and everything, but surely this was wrong.

And he was going to smash a wounded caveman on the head with a rock as he was hindering their journey back to the TARDIS. It could be argued that the Doctor was doing this for the greater good, but it's still very callous.

Yup, this was pretty ruthless stuff

David Tennant has had some of the better evil Doctor scenes, as discussed above

There's been a few 'evil' robot Doctors not yet mentioned. The Daleks created a 1st Doctor robot (which looked nothing like him half of the time :P) in 'The Chase'. I find the scenes of him sparring with the Doctor to be genuinely sinister. Then there was a sinister 4th Doctor robot in 'The Android Invasion'.

Good call above on 'The Invasion of Time'. Tom Baker was very convincing in that. I think it's slightly unfairly maligned as serial. The main bone of contention is the old building used to represent the TARDIS corridors, which were pretty poor, and Leela's underwhelming exit. But the plot is not too bad and Tom's performance was excellent.

In the mini episode Night of the Doctor, when the Eighth Doctor is holding the goblet filled with the ''Warrior'' potion, he shouts at the Chief of the Sisterhood. He angrily asks her to get out.

In Cold War, we see the Eleventh Doctor get very angry after the Ice Warrior is given an almost deadly dose of water vs. electricity mix. The Doctor then, is determined that the person responsible is held prisoner for his actions.

For me that was a very unconvincing bit of "character development". I was unconvinced by Adelaid's suicide as well and that there'd be no ramifications in the timeline due to the changed nature of her death.

The Seventh Doctor went a bit evil during the final 'Classic Who' story, Survival. His eyes went weird too.

Just found a clip on YouTube of this:

If you go 1 minute in, you will see Seven go all evil.

It took me a very long time to manage to forgive him for that. I was outraged.
