i must say im enjoying this latest seriese more then previous ones.

to me, growing up in the 60's, dr who was mysterious and dark, william hartnells aloof portrayal had that air of mystery about him. peter capali is doing a great job, older, darker, not as hyperbolic as tennant/smith.

possibly the best thing about it...is its on IN WINTER! well, its dark outside, and that adds considerably to the 'scariness'. i couldnt really get into a dark, mysterious, sci-fi programme when its light outside, the birds are singing, bbq's going on, mowers mowing away, etc.

I agree. I thought they went a bit too far with the Doctor seeming callous last year, but this year they've softened him without making him just like the two before him.

I wasn't around until after the original show was cancelled, but I did grow up being raised on a lot of Doctor Who by my father, especially the Tom Baker episodes, and personally Series 8 and 9 have been the most I've enjoyed the show ever since then. The 70's will always be my favourite years of the show, followed by the Patrick Troughton years and then William Hartnell, but I have been loving the last few years so much.

Agree, PC is like a classic doctor set down in in the middle of Modern who.

I think Moffat has gotten it right this series. Series 9 is the first from him that I feel warrants a hell of a lot more praise than it does criticism - not to say I haven't enjoyed previous series, but this one has been far less divisive for me. It's worked on a number of levels.

Capaldi is a huge asset. I still think he was softened too quickly at the start of Series 9, but that he's still done more with the character in his time than anyone before him has.

Coleman is another asset, and has tremendously fun and friendly chemistry with Capaldi whilst Clara has been written very consistently - even if she's not been as front and centre for Series 9 as she was for Series 8.

There's been a nice balance of new and old elements in a rather retrospective series (not a problem that it looks back so much, but I'd hope to counter this Series 10 focuses a lot more on new ideas, new major threats), and some really good pacing to the stories which have remembered to slow down and talk things through rather than throw us another action sequence.

I feel the writing team has been a great one, with a lot of balance. Five of the episodes have come from writers introduced this year or the last, and there's a nice mix of new blood and familiar thrown in.

It's not been a perfect series...structurally it's a bit awkward and I feel it probably had one too many two-parters (Whithouse's story condensed into a shorter story would have made an excellent thriller episode...although would likely have felt a little rushed), there's a few too many reused sets and locations, Mark Gatiss' script (in an episode that didn't offend me like it did so many) is the latest 'safe' addition of his and I really feel someone else should be given his almost reserved annual slot now. But beyond that I can't pick much fault, aside from the abysmal scheduling which isn't the show's own fault at all.

If the finale is good, then the series will be a superb one. If it's a let down then as a whole Series 9 still has it in the bag for me as a very good series, and easily Moffat's most impressive, most unusual and hardest to summarise.

I thought both Tennant and Smith were great and loved their portrayals of the Doctor. It's taken me longer to warm to Capaldi and there's still a couple of things which I'm unsure about (the scruffy version of his costume, the guitar and glasses) but there's two episodes in particular from this series where he really nailed it for me, that speech in the Zygon Inversion and the anger, hurt and cold rage displayed in Face the Raven. As great as they were I can't imagine either Tennant or Smith pulling off those scenes as well. I just hope that they keep playing to Capaldi's strengths and don't try and make him into a clone of previous incarnations.

I wish they'd get rid of the kiddie episodes, the viking one, yuck. But at its peak this series has been the best of nu who. That Face the Raven episode was television genius. And Capaldi and Missy together make this the strongest cast yet. It's light years ahead of the lows of the Matt Smith years.

I haven't been the biggest fan of Moffat but boy he's got it right this series.

Been a mixed bag. No all time classics, 6 good episodes, 4 shockers. Vast improvement on s7 and 8. On a par with s6 so far.

I think this has been a very consistent series. It has had a steady plateau of good- very good with peaks being The Zygon Inversion and Face the Raven. The only thing lacking so far for me is a 'Listen', a 'Midnight' or a 'Blink'. A stone cold classic that stands out above the rest for both its originality and singular brilliance. I am hoping the next two episodes might give me this. As I say despite a number of issues its been a very strong series of Doctor Who but it needs that extra something to make it memorable and thereby cast what has gone before in a more glorious light. Its had classic moments- THAT speech being one of them- but not an entire season defining episode. Yet...

I agree. I am enjoying this series much more than the last one. I think they tried a little too hard to make the current Doctor different from his immediate predecessors, and he emerged as a character quite lacking in empathy at first, although that got better as Capaldi settled into the role. This year, however, we have seen a more confident Doctor, still with greater gravitas than Matt Smith, but regaining a slightly whacky edge that has rounded his character.

It's been ok probably an improvement over the last series but not compelling viewing for me. In fact I'm an episode behind not having watched the Raven one yet and only just watched the previous one last night.That was pretty good though.
