I read a comment about this earlier and then reminded a bit of footage and I swear he has actually gained weight in the jungle and looks chubbier than when he started.

No I think he puffs himself up like a bird does ..
They do puff up for many reasons. Usually they are sulking or annoyed. I also could be because they maybe ill but, you'd see signs along with the puffing. Mine do it several times a day.
And yes, to making them look stronger to there mate. (depends on what type of bird.) The Spandoo or Glasgow Pigeon likes to puff itself up frequently .

to cut a long story short he thought he had it in the bag.he went in there giving it big licks thinking he'd run the camp and its backfired rather spectacularly.

Interesting what you say, and do you think it could also mean that the person doing the puffing up is doing it deliberately to annoy?

People can get puffed up with indignation.
I think that's his problem, not everyone understands how very important he is.
That or he's full of hot air. With luck he'll get bitten on a trial and deflate like a balloon.
