I love this man! Whether with The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things, The Jackals or solo he never fails to make brilliant music! He's got a great voice, oodles of charisma, he's a talented songwriter and guitarist, he shows a lot of musical versatility (I think his solo album is amazing and so different) and he's a great live performer. Oh plus he acts too! Lol. What's not to love about this man?! Any other Carl fans here?

The libertines did some great stuff. At the time him and Pete kind of brought Rock n Roll attitude back to the UK. Which was refreshing.

Yes, his work with The Libertines was and is great but his solo work and work with Dirty Pretty Things and The Jackals is just as brilliant, imo. He's a terrific artist.

Wow, no one else likes him?!! I thought he had a lot of fans!!

My friend met him a few times and said he was always up himself. Whereas Pete was engaging and friendly.

Oh you must! They were great. I do miss them. Their debut album "Waterloo To Anywhere" is particularly brilliant. Carl's new band The Jackals are terrific too. You should check out their album Let It Reign.

I like him although I think he needs Pete more than Pete needs him in terms of creative output.

I prefer everything by The Libertines, all three Babyshambles albums and Petes solo album (Grace/Wastelands) to any of Carls stuff. I do like Carls stuff though, his solo album had some good songs (The Fall in particular) but also had quite a bit of filler. Dirty Pretty Things first album was decent but their second was only OK and I can't help thinking that some of the DPT songs were a bit "Libertines by numbers". The Jackals album is pretty good though.

Don't get me wrong, I do like him but I prefer him in The Libertines.

For me personally I don't think Carl needs Peter at all. Carl writes great music on his own, but I do like his stuff with the Libertines, obviously. I'm going to see them in January and can't wait. I like Peter and have his Babyshambles albums and his solo album and they're all excellent. I think he's a terrific songwriter but, for me, I'm not very keen on his singing voice and find I can't listen to too much of him at a time because his singing tends to grate on me after a bit, whereas I love Carl's singing voice so much more and could listen to him for hours! All a matter of taste, of course. They're both terrific, talented artists and it's cool to see them working together again. I hope I get to see Carl with The Jackals sometime though as I'd love to hear their songs played live.

As for Sifter22, who says he's heard Carl is a bit of a dick whereas Peter is nice and friendly - I think, upon reading Carl's excellent autobiography, it's evident that Carl is a lot more introverted and shy compared to the more outgoing and talkative Peter. In his book Carl talks about his lifelong shyness and crippling nerves and that probably explains a lot about how he is meeting people. Also, if people are saying this upon meeting Carl when he was with The Libertines first time around, again reading Carl's book, it's obvious that he was extremely stressed out with what was going on behind the scenes with Peter in the band at the time. If I'd been in his position I wouldn't have felt much like being all cheerful and charming to anyone either! Some people just aren't as comfortable as others meeting and chatting with strangers though. I just think both he and Peter have very different personalities. To me Carl comes across as very humble and self-deprecating, but I've no doubt he has his grumpy off days like the best of us! Lol.

Carl proved with Dirty Pretty Things that he can stand on his own two feet. However, The Libertines were the more established act so it was always with them where he would have the most success. Pete was all over the media at the time for his antics and his relationship with Kate Moss, and therefore Babyshambles inevitably got more attention than DPT.

Pete has some great songwriting abilities but his behaviour leading to the Libs' breakup meant that they couldn't continue as a band. Carl seemed genuinely gutted at the time but they couldn't carry on with Pete the way he was. I'm so pleased they've managed to reconcile and I thought Anthems of Doomed Youth was a great set.

When I say he needs Pete, I agree that Carl does write good music but I think that Pete is more capable of writing an amazing, classic album on his own. With Carl for me it sometimes seems a bit laboured/a bit forced and as I said, I think some of his stuff comes over as a bit "Libertines by numbers". I'm not taking anything away from him, as I say, I enjoy his stuff but I think he's missing something that I think Pete has.

Hope you enjoy the gig in January, I didn't bother getting tickets as I was lucky enough to get tickets to their Rock City gig in September and I hate Arenas. Here's hoping that they do some proper venues again after the arena tour though. I've seen them numerous times in various incarnations (Pete solo, Carl solo, Babyshambles etc) and they've always been great. I would like to catch The Jackals at some point too.

Well of course it's going to say stuff like that in his book! I'm not anti-Carl or Libertines by the way, I'm only going on what I've heard from people I know who met him. I saw them in the summer and they put on a good show. I never get too bothered about a musicians personality as it spoils the mystique.

I'm a big fan of Carl, and loved his album released at the start of the year with the Jackals, and the much awaited Libertines comeback. I found his autobiography to be a very an interesting, and often quite sad read.

Yes, his book is quite sad in parts. The guy's been through a lot really. I do love his sense of humour in the book and some of his anecdotes are hilarious, especially The Libertines escapades in Japan! The Jackals album is terrific, I think. So different to his solo album and both are very different again from The Libertines, which shows his versatility as an artist. Damn, I can't wait to see The Libertines in January! I hate large arenas but it's that or nothing and I really want to see them. Hopefully I'll get the chance to see Carl with The Jackals in a smaller venue sometime.

Of course it's going to say what stuff in his book? That he's an introverted and shy person? Why wouldn't that be true? Lots of musicians seem confident on stage but are shy off-stage and uncomfortable meeting people, nothing unusual in that. He also said himself in his book that he can be a moody git at times, lol. His book is an interesting read and he's refreshingly honest in it. Anyway, it doesn't bother me what he may or may not be like meeting people as I'm not likely to be going to be meeting him and have only ever really been interested in him/The Libs/Dirty Pretty Things, etc for their music, mainly. His book is the only one I've ever bought about or by him as I thought it would make a good read and it certainly is. Anyway, I never mentioned anything about Carl as a person in my original post, only him as a musician/performer. It was yourself who made a personal comment about him supposedly being a dick, etc, and I responded to that. To be honest I really couldn't careless, one way or another - to me he's a brilliant musician/songwriter and performer and that's what counts. As long as the guy isn't a murderer or rapist I don't care if he's a grumpy old git or aloof at times, lol! I can listen to him sing and play for hours. Great artist.

So why bother asking me 'in what way' if you'd already read that he can be a moody git at times?

Lol, because I thought you might be referring to something other than just he can be a bit 'up himself' at the stage door or wherever. You know, like he's actually really rude, offensive and insulting to people! Anyway, moving on....

Nope, no deeper than that I'm afraid. I'll just stick to his music.

For those who only know Carl from his Libertines stuff check out these great songs.

My favourite song of Carl's with Dirty Pretty Things - Truth Begins. Such a brilliant song:

Two of my favourite solo songs of his, The Fall:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA3T...w&spfreload=10
and Shadows Fall:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UXu...U&spfreload=10

Two of my favourite Carl Barat And The Jackals songs. Glory Days (brilliant video too):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UC5...A&spfreload=10
and A Storm Is Coming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn_-...c&spfreload=10

and finally Carl singing The Kinks' Sunny Afternoon. I just love his grimace when he sings an off-note, lol.

No one likes any of the songs I linked to? I really recommend them, damn good music. Also I can't link to anything via this old phone I'm using at the moment but check out another song of his with the Jackals called Summer In The Trenches. Pure brilliance. I think Carl is way too underappreciated!
