You do not have long summer nights compared to me.

When I watch the BBC News from London in the summer it is dark by 9 and we still have the sun up for another 90 minutes.”

London is one of the most eastern places in the UK (much more so than Edinburgh) so that partly explains why they get dark so early in midsummer. But also in midsummer the sun is up a bit earlier in the morning than Edinburgh though quite a bit less than 90 minutes earlier.

Edinburgh in the east of Scotland is as far west as the western cities of Carlisle and Cardiff.

Is it just me. It seems to be getting darker a bit earlier in the year at this time of year than it used to and getting darker a bit later in the evening than it used to in the summer months.

Yeah but it still doesn't change the fact that South Eastern England has appalling sunset times in the summer.

When I lived in Northern Ireland I was not in support of having UK on CET timezone but I think it would be good if England was moved to CET, they need it!!!

I doubt those in Bristol or Manchester would agree with you re: CET.

I don't know but i'm pretty sure nowhere in England has good a daylength in June as Ireland & Scotland. You definitely couldn't go out for a walk and come back at 11 here.

Sun has more or less set now. I don't know why it sets early, sunset time is 5:12pm here and we are at sea level so there are no obstructions in the way.

Anyway, sunset not for another while at home. Sister says it gets dark at 6pm there now. Suppose it will be getting dark 7pm when i'm back in 3 weeks time which is quite a change from here where it is now getting dark at 5:30!

Either way it seems like we have to wait for an eternity for days to get longer lately, you would it would be bright to 6 by now, it's almost March!!!

There are no webcams in County Londonderry so here is the current situation in Belfast where it will get darker about 10 minutes before home.

It is perfectly late enough for me. I feel really sorry for people over in the west who have to put up with daylight so late in the summer.

WOW look at the difference! That's quite noticeable! England has terrible sun hours!

I couldn't cope with a 9pm sunset. I like to go out walking after 10.

Sometimes when the weather is warm we will also go to the beach at 9 and just stay there for two hours.

Sunset in Norfolk is about 9.20 in mid summer. Quite late enough in my view.

Nautical dusk 1837,
Astronomical dusk 1917,
Night lasts til
Astronomical dawn 0520
nautical dawn 0600
civil dawn 0640
sunrise 0715

And day length in my neck of the woods is getting longer by nearly 4 mins a day

We spent 3 weeks in South of Sapin and found it really hard to cope with very short days. Had to get out of swimming pool by 7pm and then ended up spending the evening housebound as it was dark by 8.

Found the same with south florida except there was stuff to do there like shopping, eating etc.

What time of year was that? I'm in southern Spain and at the moment it gets dark around 7pm. In the summer it's light til about 10. The earliest it gets dark in the winter is about 6pm.

It's bright till 10? REALLY?

We went in June at the solstice and the sunset was at 8:20 at the latest. That was in Murcia on GMT +2, their natural timezone is GMT so if they did not have double DST their sunset would be 6:20pm!

A full three hours before here!

London isn't dark by 9pm in the summer. Watch a big brother summer series, the 9pm eviction show is broadcast in mostly broad daylight.

In mid summer, if you ever see a reporter outside the Houses of Parliament on the 10 p.m. news the sky is still noticeably blue. Actual sunset is just after 9.20 but of-course it is still quite light for a while afterwards. I believe the period of twilight is much longer at higher latitudes - the closer you go to the equator, the quicker it gets completely dark after the sun has gone down.
