In mid summer, if you ever see a reporter outside the Houses of Parliament on the 10 p.m. news the sky is still noticeably blue. Actual sunset is just after 9.20 but of-course it is still quite light for a while afterwards. I believe the period of twilight is much longer at higher latitudes - the closer you go to the equator, the quicker it gets completely dark after the sun has gone down.
Yep, that's about right. I've been living in London for nearly two years and it's just like anywhere else in the country where it's after 10pm when it's completely dark. London does have some sort of weird weather system of its own, the summer here in London last year was great but not so good for other parts of the country.

Sunset in Murcia on 21st June is 21.31 CEST

Sunset in Murcia today is 18.47 CET
oh silly me, I must've been using our timezone. Either way it still gets darker alot earlier than Northern Ireland.

They are on our latitude so they should be in our timezone. Really sunset is 8:31pm.

London isn't dark by 9pm in the summer. Watch a big brother summer series, the 9pm eviction show is broadcast in mostly broad daylight.
No it's not. It's dark most of the show.

Sunset Londonderry: 10:14pm
Civil twilight Londonderry: 11:12pm

Sunset London: 9:20pm
Civil twilight London: 10:10pm

I use the civil twilight because that is the time that it gets dark up here. Where I'm from it doesn't get dark at sunset, it stays bright (like daylight not dusk) for a LONG time after.

No, it's not like that in Ireland or Scotland. We get dark after 11pm.

If you head far north in Scotland in June, on a clear night it's almost like it never gets truly dark, there's a twilight zone of a few hours after about 11 PM and then the sun starts rising.

These are images taken at a beach near me in June 2015. The first image is of the sun at 9pm and the second image is at 10pm just before sunset. It is not like this anywhere in England at any point in the summer.

In your earlier post you said it's dark in london before 9pm, you've now contradicted that with this post.

Having been to a few bb evictions, some in the summer series Its very much daylight for most of the show at Elstree studios just outside of London.

It doesn't matter though does it? I've already proven that England has shit daylight hours compared to Scotland and Ireland THROUGHOUT the year!

Who wants sunset at 9:20 when you can have it at 10:20? Not me anyway! I love my 10pm walks and wouldn't trade them for 9pm walks.

Are you some kind of advanced England-hating AI? Roaming the internet, identifying every single opportunity to make a negative comment, no matter how tenuous it may be?

8.20 would suit me better. I prefer a bit of darkness at the end of the day.

In my neck of the woods May 16th is the last day that it is true night.

After that is astronomical dusk til july 27th

I always thought that it was night when it was dark but thanks to the websites. I have found that the sunrise in the winter was from the SE and sunset was in the SW. And in the summer that sunrise was from the NE and sunset was in the NW

That would explain why sunset in the summer is about ten minutes after london in my neck of the woods

It's bright till 10? REALLY?

We went in June at the solstice and the sunset was at 8:20 at the latest. That was in Murcia on GMT +2, their natural timezone is GMT so if they did not have double DST their sunset would be 6:20pm!

A full three hours before here!
Is it not 9.20pm GMT+2, and if Spain went by GMT+1 in the summer like the UK, the sun would set at 8.20pm (7.20pm GMT) at Murcia, only just over 1 hour earlier than London.

In my neck of the woods tonight was
sunset 1722,
Civil dusk1757,
Nautical dusk 1837,
Astronomical dusk 1917,
Night lasts til
Astronomical dawn 0520
nautical dawn 0600
civil dawn 0640
sunrise 0715

And day length in my neck of the woods is getting longer by nearly 4 mins a day

On the subject of night. It explains why when you are on holiday in spain or greece. it gets dark quicker
Indeed - the closer you are to the Equator, the less twilight there is after sunset. So it can go from completely light to completely dark in a matter of a few minutes.

(it was bright at 6am this morning though)

Lol - how can you describe sunset times as "pathetic", as though they're a result of ineptitude?

Well, it's not March yet and it's not even dark at 5pm now. I know because I leave work around 5pm each day and the sun was still up when I left work yesterday.

According to my sunrise/sunset app, sunset was at 5:40pm today.

Well sunset was 5:25 here. And it was actually before that because the sun always seems to go down early here even though it's flat.

I think posters on here think sunrise and sunset times are decided by the government each year. And some posters were advocating us changing to the Central European Timezone. Utterly mad.

Yeah you should. You should see the sunset times the rest of the UK gets.

Unfortunately it's very dark now, and one could still go out for a walk with a torch.
