Big Brothers Complaints about early sunsets in East Anglia are quite ridiculous and hilarious.
I've not visited this thread for a while (even though I started this whole discussion in the first place way back in November!). I actually can't believe just how long this thread has become. I wonder if Big Bro will still be complaing in June that it's still going dark at 9 when he wants it to be light till 1am just so he can have a midsummers BBQ and house party while everyone's already asleep!
Lets See... Where do I start.....

“When I watch the BBC News from London in the summer it is dark by 9 and we still have the sun up for another 90 minutes.”
BBC News is at 10PM! And you say you get 90 extra minutes evening sun??? Surely you don't have the sun up until 11:30 do you?

“Yeah but it still doesn't change the fact that South Eastern England has appalling sunset times in the summer.
When I lived in Northern Ireland I was not in support of having UK on CET timezone but I think it would be good if England was moved to CET, they need it!!!
”
Sunset times in June in London are still after 9pm so I wouldn't call that appalling. As for going on CET, you also have to consider the rest of England, as most of it is both further west and/or north of East Anglia and London. I live just north of Manchester. If you drew a line on a map between your home in Londonderry and your other place in East Anglia my location would be roughly half way between the two. Our sunset time is around 9:30 in June (it actually gets as late as 9:45pm but as I live in a hilly area the sun disappears 15-25 minutes sooner). In June it's still light at 10pm and dusk doesn't fall until 10:30pm. If we were on CET it would still be light after 11pm when everyone's in bed!!

“It's bright till 10? REALLY?
We went in June at the solstice and the sunset was at 8:20 at the latest. That was in Murcia on GMT +2, their natural timezone is GMT so if they did not have double DST their sunset would be 6:20pm!
A full three hours before here!”
Get your facts right please! The sun sets at 9:30pm in June, same time as many places in Britain:

“oh silly me, I must've been using our timezone. Either way it still gets darker alot earlier than Northern Ireland.
They are on our latitude so they should be in our timezone. Really sunset is 8:31pm.”
You realise your mistake, then you scrap that and STILL say that the sunset in Spain is too early, because it's really only 8:30pm in our timezone. Sorry, but what the clock says in a particular country is the real time. You wouldn't go to New York and say, "oh, the clock says 6am but in England it's currently 11am therefore sunset is really too late" would you?
You say that England should be on CET to make the sunsets later, yet say that Spain should be on our existing timezone (GMT/BST) even though that would actually make the sunsets earlier. What???

“No it's not. It's dark most of the show.
Sunset Londonderry: 10:14pm
Civil twilight Londonderry: 11:12pm
Sunset London: 9:20pm
Civil twilight London: 10:10pm
I use the civil twilight because that is the time that it gets dark up here. Where I'm from it doesn't get dark at sunset, it stays bright (like daylight not dusk) for a LONG time after.”
If the Show lasts from 9-10pm, then at least half the show will be in broad daylight and the rest of the show it will just be starting to go dark.
And Civil Twlight doesn't last much longer in your place than London. It's 50 minutes in London and just 8 minutes extra in Londonderry. Yes, it doesn't get dark straight after sunset in Summer, but not just in your location!
You seem to think that your daylight hours are invincible and any place further South is inadequate like the Government decides the daylight hours. You say England should change it's timezone to CET yet Spain should switch to ours! Perhaps we should make it so we have a different timezone for every region of the country (or better yet every town!) so that everywhere has the same sunset times as you. There, are you happy now?
Look at this clip, there's still some light in the sky after 10pm:

“It doesn't matter though does it? I've already proven that England has shit daylight hours compared to Scotland and Ireland THROUGHOUT the year!”
Throughout the year? What are you talking about?? England is east of Ireland and South of Scotland, so it gets earlier sunrises than Ireland and actually gets more daylight than Scotland and your place in the Winter and less in the Summer. Whats wrong about that?
In Manchester sunrise was at 6:47am and sunset was 5:55pm today. Pretty good use of the daylight for the daylight hours we currently have. You also get some daylight before and after that as well! Dawn was breaking at 6am when I woke up this morning and there was still a few bits of light in the sky at 7pm!
Quote:
“Who wants sunset at 9:20 when you can have it at 10:20? Not me anyway! I love my 10pm walks and wouldn't trade them for 9pm walks.”
Those who want to get some sleep do!
Quote:
“Well it's still very much sun down here before 5:20.. It's pathetic, never seen anything like it.
(it was bright at 6am this morning though)”
Well, get up earlier to compensate and use some of that precious daylight! Just set your alarm 30-60 minutes earlier. Pretty simple really.
Quote:
“ Maybe the government should look at changing DST dates to early March?
Either way never expected to see days end this early in March.”
It's now getting lovely and light at 7am. Why punish the early risers by plunging them into darkness again? That would not go down well in England, especially more western areas such as Liverpool and Cornwall. You can have your way in October just before the clocks go back when it's still going dark at 6 but it's not getting light till 8am (or more like 9am where you live!).
Quote:
“So you think a 5:30pm sunset in March - a spring month is appropriate?”
Yes, I do. March is still a Winter month for the most part. Spring does not start until March 21st. We've just had heavy snow yesterday in my neck of the woods, call that Spring?
Quote:
“I don't see why East Anglia can't use CET. Sunset before 4pm in the middle of winter is atrocious.
Oh yeah and by the way, I already have 9am sunrises. ”
Oh, and 9am sunrises aren't? A 9am sunrise on a cold winters morning must be horrible. Getting to School/College/Work and it's still dark. I do feel sorry for you.
Quote:
“So you think that 5pm sunsets in March are acceptable?
Ok?
I don't think you realise how awful this region's sunsets are compared to the rest of the British Isles.”
I'll ask David Cameron to put the clocks in East Anglia forward an hour at your request. I'm sure that will go down just fine.
Quote:
“It's not hard for anyone to look at average daylight hours and see that 5pm sunsets are below the norm throughout the world, compare sunsets to places like Moscow, Winnipeg etc, they're pretty much all after 6pm now.”
Gosh, you're not keeping up down there. Sunsets still before 6pm, that will not do. Would you like us to loan you some more sun? You can pay it back in the Summer.
