They were talking about a specific day where they leave England and get to NI. (presumably the journey will completed during daylight).

If Big Bro cares so much about daylight, perhaps he could buy some more....
Perhaps he should buy a private plane and hire a pilot. He then can travel after his studies in Norfolk in his plane back home to Londonderry, then overnight, while he is sleeping, he can then fly back to Norfolk ready for his studies in the morning again.

He then has the best of both worlds - wake up to beautiful early sunrise in Norfolk, and settle down to nice late sunrise back at home in the evenings.

He'll then experience over 30 extra precious minutes of daylight to cherish, more than everyone else, all without lifting a finger

I got very badly sunburned on my back at 3 years old, big blisters.

And it was always freezing at other times in Norfolk.

I shake my fist to the Eastern Gods to this day.

I'm back home now. I just arrived before 7, it stayed bright to 7 just. After 7 the darkness came in quickly.

Thought you said before it took ages to go dark where you live. Never mind.

At the moment where I live the light is starting to fade shortly after 5, by 6 it's starting to go dark, by half 6 the sky is a deep blue and by 7 its gone completely dark.

Tbh lol it's still not that good lol. I thought i'd be happy for it to be bright to 7 but I think we need to wait for the clocks to go forward at the end of the month and then we'll see the benefits.

But of course by then it still won't be good enough and you'll be demanding a 9:30 sunset.

Some people are never satisfied.

No.. If you can't get things done by 8 then you've got problems.

Plus when I say it was bright to 7 it was just barely, the sun wasn't up.

What Problems? Get what things done? What is there to be done outside at this time of year?

It's still cold outside. The grass still doesn't need mowing. The hedges still don't need cutting.

I'm Wondering what is it that you want to do till 8pm that you can't do in artificial light?

Have a BBQ?
Go Camping?

Summers not here yet...

It's just coming up to 6pm and still fairly bright here in London, absolutely fantastic, love the lighter late afternoons and evenings.

6:30pm and dusk is just falling. Beautiful red sky to the east and deep blue sky to the east. Love this time of day. Just wish it lasted longer (ie took longer to go dark like it does further north).

The darkness probably won't come in to after 7 tonight, the sun is splitting the pavements.

Sunset is 6:31pm

It's been such a gorgeous day today. This is a picture of the sun on it's way down now. I guess sunset is at 6:30pm.

It stayed bright to 7 but only just. It seems to get darker quicker now than in summer.

I guess we still have a long way to go before we've got 11pm daylight.

There is still a weak glow in the Western Sky and you can still make out the silhouette of the surrounding hills in the darkness. It's like a summer night where it never goes completely dark.

We're now entering that time of year where the twilight period is at it's shortest. At both the Spring and Autumnal Equinox, the transition from day to night and vice versa is at it's quickest, whereas in the Summer it's at it's slowest (in fact, in England, on a clear night, in the middle of Summer, it may never seem to go completely dark. There may always appear to be some glow in the sky towards the northern horizon). This is because everywhere in the British Iles never gets "truly dark", astro twilight is the darkest it gets. Places further north such as Scotland and Northern Ireland get Nautical Twilight (dusk) and the sky may never go darker than a deep blue during the night.
At the Winter Solstice however the twilight period is a little longer than it is now, though not as long as during the summer.

I did this comparison of twilight lengths in different locations at different times of year using the timeanddate.com website.

Equinox (21st March/September)

London
Civil Twilight Length: 33 mins
Nautical Twilight Length: 40 mins
Total Twilight Length: 73 mins

My Location (Lancashire)
Civil Twilight Length: 35 mins
Nautical Twilight Length: 42 mins
Total Twilight Length: 77 mins

Londonderry
Civil Twilight Length: 36 mins
Nautical Twilight Length: 43 mins
Total Twilight Length: 79 mins

Winter Solstice

Londonderry
Civil Twilight Length: 45 mins
Nautical Twilight Length: 48 mins
Total Twilight Length: 93 mins

Summer Solstice

London
Civil Twilight Length: 48 mins
Nautical Twilight Length: 1hr 15 mins
Total Twilight Length: 2hr 3 mins

My Location (Lancashire)
