I think where I live on the solstice the sun goes down to about 10 degrees but that's still pretty dark.

I don't know how far north you would need to go before you could walk in the middle of the night.

The Shetland Islands in the far north of the UK probably. They have the famous Summer Dim up there.

On the solstice it will be Civil Twilight for most of the "night". On the winter solstice however they only have 6 hours of daylight and sun doesn't get any higher than 6 degrees above the horizon

Here are some videos that will show you how dark it gets up there:

Probably to the Shetland Islands where they have what's called the summer dim.

You could probably have a midnight walk there and still just be able to see on a clear night.

On a perfectly clear night you'd see a blue tinge on the northern horizon around the time of solar midnight.

The Shetland Islands are around the 60° parallel north, the same as cities like Bergen, Stockholm, Helsinki and of course St Petersburg, which is famous for its "white nights".

Up at this latitude it's barely dark in summer tbh.
Even at my latitude in the deep of the night it's still very dark.

Well how bright is it exactly then??

Dusk is falling here. Sky is turning dark blue.

BTW, is it swelteringly hot up in Northern Ireland like it is here?

It finally rained today after 2 weeks of dry and often hot weather. It's really freshened things up out there. It did make it darker too. At 8pm car headlights were on and even a few of the streetlights were coming on. But it makes a welcome change from the bright sun we've been having this past week, it's nice to have it a bit gloomy now.

Was just getting ready to cycle to the hospital and visit my Mum, raining now and lightening forecast, don't fancy that.

Three people critical after a strike the other day, looking pretty dark and oppressive overhead.

It must be a real challenge doing Ramadan in the UK at this time of year, we're now having nearly 17 hours of daylight and about 4 hours of twilight every day here. Especially in the hot and humid weather we're having at the moment.

BTW, does anyone know how dark it actually has to be before Muslims are allowed to eat & drink? Because technically now nowhere in the UK is fully "dark" at night.

Even London in the South does not get darker than astro twilight and it's only for 3 hours.

But not completely dark right? I'm wondering like how dark does it have to be before Muslims can eat during Ramadan? Like it is okay after sunset/before sunrise, or not during Civil twilight?

Well it's daylight to about 10:45. It gets pretty dark around midnight to 2am though.

I don't know what I could compare it to? I suppose an hour before sunrise.

Just watching the euros and surprised to see it still light in Paris, it's 10pm there. I thought sunset in France was before the UK, or is it them being an hour ahead of us.

They are directly south of London so sunset in Paris is before London.

Visited Edinburgh this past weekend, you could certainly see a difference from where I live in Cleveland, (North Yorkshire boarder/Teesside)

At 10pm it was so light, street lights came on at 10.25pm, the sky was light blue at 11,15pm when I returned to the hotel.

Street lights at home come on at 9.55pm at the moment,
