I live for this time of the year, and one of the reasons is the short hours of daylight which I love.

I'd probably be happy enough with a situation like that in equatorial regions where it gets dark between 6 and 7 p.m. throughout the year, but I couldn't live in such a location because of the hot weather. I don't dislike the summer months purely because of the absurdly long hours of daylight, but I think I'd find them much less unpleasant if it didn't stay light half the night.

I don't think I've ever known a November as dark and gloomy as this one...
Same here.

I remember a few miserable Novembers. Good thing that it usually starts to clear up in December.

Its awful. I don't recall a November being this absolutely miserable. It's done nothing but chuck down with rain every day now for 6 weeks and yesterday I had to close the curtains and put the light on at 3 in the afternoon is was so dark.

I genuinely find it depressing. You wake up open the curtains and just deflate because it's STILL dark and raining.

It's same here. Raining with strong winds. I must turn on light at 4pm.

I think what makes November so depressing is the clocks go back at the end of October so we lose an hour of daylight in evening And it gets darker day after day. There are no public holidays, the last being in August, so November is in the middle of the longest stretch without any bank holidays

Add to that the dull grey weather that's common in November.

Really is a grim month

The good news is that sunset stops getting earlier in a fortnight's time (15:49) and slowly starts to get later again on December 16th. (in Manchester).

The corresponding dates here on the central south coast are Dec. 7th. and 19th., respectively (12 days with a 15:59 sunset, so we get an extra 10 minutes afternoon light) but sunny it is not!

True but even January has on average more daylight hours than November. It should be light until 5.15pm by the end of January

Sunset starts getting later before the solstice, I read the other day. The sunrise carries on getting later till the solstice though. Just over 3 weeks and we'll start getting longer days.

We had to put the lights on at about 2.30, but that was because it was really cloudy. It's still not quite properly dark.
Yes, I've heard that too that the darkest afternoon is before the solstice. But we've still got the dreaded super dark winter mornings to come, the mornings continue to get darker until after New Year, with the darkest mornings in early January. Got up at 7:30 this morning, it was noticeably darker than last week, it was still dawn.

Much as I'd like to be in London at Christmastime, the short daylight hours have always prevented me.

This really is the strangest thread I have ever seen. Am I in the Twilight Zone? It's been the same way for my lifetime.

It would be darker later in the morning if we didn't put the clocks back. The amount of daylight doesn't change.

That is because the younger FB smartphone generation haven't paid any attention to this before as they have been preoccupied with their gadgets and can't remember the last time they looked at the sky

I've been thinking exactly the same!

I haven't noticed this year being any different to others. I'll go so far as to say that I'm quite sure it hasn't been. Anyone would think the earth had somehow shifted on its axis and we were experiencing something that had never been seen before.

Yes, of course the official daylight hours and sunrise/sunset times have been the same. What has been different though at least where I live anyway is the really gloomy, cloudy, wet weather we've been having every day this November which has made it seem much darker. The light has been fading over an hour before sunlight and we're having to put lights on at 3pm because it's so gloomy.
That's what's different..

Ok maybe a dumb question, but for last week or so and still going up to the 18th of Dec at least why has the sunset been stuck at 15:45 like every day it doesn't change now? ( just a random observation I've noticed)

This thread is hilarious. People are acting as if this year is somehow different to last year.

Make the most of it, the shortest day will be upon us soon

Because it's getting ready to reverse direction! Inertia. Think of a moving ocean liner throwing its engines into reverse and what happens when it stops... takes a while to get going in the reverse direction. Kind of. But if you checked the seconds, there would still be slight differences.

Same applies to sunrise, which happens a few weeks later (don't ask!).
