10pm and almost pitch black here. The light has been atrocious all this evening though. It's just been thick dark blanket cloud all today and yesterday, with rain at points too. It started getting really dark at about 9pm here.

I've been up to Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria today. It's been very windy and overcast all day, not felt like Summer at all, felt more like Autumn.

Coming back on the coach, it was getting gloomier and gloomier. I glanced at the clock at the front of the coach. It said 20:10. I asked the person behind me "um.. Is that clock showing the correct time".? "Errr.. Yes. It's ten minutes past eight". The shop windows were lighting up. Some street lights were coming on. "But it's going dark already, I can't beleive this".. "It's not being going dark this soon".

Now it's 9:30pm and the sky is dark blue, almost completely dark. It's also wet and very windy. I've never ever known it go dark this soon in early August. I've barely seen an evening sunset this summer. Normally I see loads. What a Summer we're having...

The way Steffan goes on about it, you'd think the clocks going back and it being dark later in the year was a new thing...

It's not that. I normally look forward to the clocks going back and the beggining of Winter, but not this year. Apart from these last couple of weeks, we've had a pretty dreadful summer, I've bearley seen a sunset and even around the solstice it still seemed to be going dark too early for the time of year due to all this cloud.

June is normally a nice month but it wasn't this year.. July and August I expect a little more rain but even August has been exceptionally bad even by UK standards.

I think it depends where you are in the country. I'm near Liverpool and have seen quite a few nice sunsets since about July. My mum's birthday is right on the solstice (21 June) so we had a picnic and it was light until gone 10pm.

Having said that, it started going dark here about half 6 today, it's pretty dark now at just gone 8:15 so probably pitch black by 9.

The problem is easily solved by moving to the south east

Or even in the south west. We were in Cornwall last week and it was still pretty light at 9pm. Only started going properly dark at 10ish.

At this time of year South West and most northerly places have around the same evening daylight.

If you compare Manchester to Truro for example, they are pretty similar. Yes, sunset is six minutes later in Truro, but you need to dig deeper than that. Nautical twilight in both places at 9:19pm, and astro twilight in Truro ends at 10:03pm, compared to 10:10pm in Manchester.

I was in St Ives this time last year and it was getting dark around 8:30pm and it was completely dark by 9:30pm no later.
