The way Steffan goes on about it, you'd think the clocks going back and it being dark later in the year was a new thing...
There was a period were I was getting up in the dark and going back home in the dark, only seeing barely an hour of daylight. It was horrible. |

The problem is easily solved by moving to the south east

It's not great for your mood though. Last year in Norwich it was getting dark at 3:30 in December so by the time I was out of class and back to my room it was dark.

Are you in windowless rooms for 8 hours at a time? When I was at Uni we saw daylight in between lectures, through windows, stuff like that. I didn't mind the dark, I like it, to be honest.
My university has few windows yes. |

Just about dark now here in NW England. Was already dark (streetlights on!) at 7pm last night due to the massive thunderstorm. When the power went off at about 7:15 everywhere was plunged into darkness. Streetlights out, no lights on in houses. Could just about see my way up the street. Madness.

Still daylight right now where I live.
I recall that it used to be already pitch by 7pm just days before the autumn equinox. Now it's 7.30pm and still daylight. Has there been a recent pole shift moved the uk a fair amount further north? |

Sunset here in Brentwood is 19.05 tonight, Compared to 2 weeks ago you can really tell how dark is at 19:30 and VERY dark at 20:00, These evenings are drawing in FAST and cant believe that the equinox is 4 days away .
This time of the year (mid late September) till March is the best time of the year for me for day length and it only gets better each day. Not only that but you can tell how much lower the sun is in the sky at solar noon (altitude of 40) and dropping by a degree every 2 days) compared to in June when it reaches a max of 62 degrees here. Can't beat a low sun angle in December when it only reaches 15.0 degrees here, Lovely |

Here the sun reaches a maximum of 60 degrees in June and about 12/13 degrees in December. I have noticed the sun being a bit lower in the mornings now but it's still getting pretty high during the day. Latest sunrise in Winter is 8:30 and latest sunset 3:45 (though it can be going dark as early as 3:00pm in December ).

Have I missed something here? I'm pretty sure the nights always start drawing in very quickly around the equinox. Nothing different from every other year you've been alive.
Still, the bad news for all you light/sun allergics is that the days start getting longer again in about 3 months. Enjoy.

My comment was made in reply to how much better a summer it's been in the south east, particularly London.

It is indeed getting really dark here now, no thanks to the gloomy wet weather weve had today. It has been going dark at 7pm every day for awhile now, it starts getting gloomier earlier and earlier. Its like a giant grey blanket snuffing out the daylight. Won't be long before the clocks go back and the streetlights will be coming on at 3pm again.
And we'll be back to where we started.

Its barely got light here today...
Its been dull, gloomy and depressing all day. There's also been some heavy rain as well (surprise surprise). Got up at 8am this morning, and wondered what month we were in.. Its felt like a day in November or December when its just not seemed to get properly light all day. It feels like Winter when you have to have the lights on all day. Its 4pm and it feels like its going dark already, like on a late autumn/early winters day. Its always so gloomy up north in the hills... |

Thankfully it's cleared up now but it's now turned very windy. But there's a mixture of blue sky and some nice cloud formations so can't complain.
It is however, starting to go dark though... |

Still fairly light here in the West Midlands, our sunset time today is 1812 so the sun has just set, tomorrow sunrise at 7.40 and sunset at 1805.
The nights are really drawing in and it's definitely getting to casseroles, warm jumpers, padded coats and boots time of year. |

Half 6 and very dark now. Nice sky to the north west though.
And we're now only 6 days away from you know what....
