Don't wish to add to the general depression but we have almost another 4 months where evenings will be at least as dark as they are now.

I think one advantage of this time of year is the sun is weak and goes down early so you don't have to stay indoors like in summer if you hate strong sunshine

The problem is though that once November starts it's usually so weak that it's actually warmer when it's cloudy and bloody freezing whenever it's sunny. And I think more people will want to stay inside rather than go out on a long, dark cold evening or a frosty sunny morning.

I know 1st Nov last year was an exception (beautiful warm day) but we aren't getting that this year, this is the last warm day before things turn icy cold later this week...

Since when have we had hot weather in the last week of October?? The highest temperature here this week has been 13 degrees and that's when it's been cloudy so that feels "mild" or "lukewarm" at best. I've looked back at my weather records and the last moderately warm day here was the 4th where temperatures reached 16.7C.

We don't really get much hot weather up here - I think it hit 24 degrees once someday in September and a couple of days in August, so we haven't done too badly I suppose.

We make the most of any nice weather up here.

And why would anyone want to feel as cold as 3 degrees?? Lol.

It was only the South East that had a good summer with decent hot spells.

To hear all the London-centric weather presenters gushing, about how great it was, was toe-curling

I find presenters generally tend to think that everyone likes hot weather. They should moderate their tone a bit and acknowledge that many people genuinely prefer it cool and cloudy to hot and sunny.

Being Ginger, I've always been careful and this summer in the SW was perfect for me.

The two heatwaves in 2013 were, I'm sure, a factor in my Mum's death.
She was ill and couldn't keep anything down, including water, in spite of my best efforts to get her to sip often. She was admitted twice to hospital and died on the second admission.
I'm sure dehydration had weakened her.

Even though she was ill, neither medics nor us thought her condition was life-threatening.
She was 70.

This is what it means when you hear that the very young and the elderly are 'at risk' during a heatwave

If it's 3 degrees you can feel as warm as you wish by dressing appropriately. If you overdo it and get too warm you can take a layer of clothing off. A relatively simple process.

If it's 30 degrees you can be naked and still feel too hot, and in any case being naked isn't always practicable.

And nothing beats being out in the chilly winter air, then coming indoors and warming up, particularly in front of a nice fire. In summer you come in after being too hot outside, and you're still too hot inside.

4:30pm and it's been a fine and sunny day but still the sun has disappeared about 15 minutes ago and it's already starting to get dark. It's lighting up time already as they say.

It is ironic that we had a referendum on EU membership but now some want us to adopt their timezone even though our day length throughout the year is based on our geographical location on the planet.

Yes, almost dark at five o'clock in the evenings now. I adore the long, dark nights so this makes me happy.

Don't like the dark mornings, though.

True, but it isn't always that easy... Try taking a heavy coat off when you're outside and have no rucksack to put it in - you have to carry it round all day..

Also remember that not everyone likes to wrap up warm in big heavy jackets, hats, gloves, scarfs etc. I'm sure a lot of people prefer wearing summer clothes - and often even in Summer it's not warm enough to wear them most the time here.

When it's that hot outside I usually stay in as much as possible as my house stays relatively cool even on the hottest days - it got up to about 30 here on the hottest day of the year in July this year and the last - while the house only reached 24/25 degrees. It didn't actually feel that bad outside on the hottest day this year because the humidity wasn't too high and there was a bit of a breeze - that always helps. It's the hot, humid nights that are always the worst bit when it comes to hot weather.

It's the humidity and mugginess that usually comes with hot weather that I hate, rather the actual temperature or the sunshine.

I used to be like you - always loving snow and winter and the short cold days - and then in early Spring dreading the thought of warmer weather and the temperatures getting back into double figures again!

Anyway, I tend to better appreciate nice Sunny weather these days - especially as we don't get the hot weather very often - at least up here anyway. It was 14/15 degrees and sunny this afternoon but I would have preferred the sun to be a bit stronger.

Also remember that we get many more days of cold weather with below 2-digit temperatures than warm sunny days.

My sweet spot for sunshine in Summer is about 15-22 degrees, with low humidity.
In Spring and Autumn it's about 13-16 degrees as I'm used to cooler weather then.

If I'm out walking a while though I prefer it a bit cooler, about 12-16 degrees as I easily get hot and sweaty.

That said, I do enjoy a crisp snow walk in Winter, I usually get to do about one a year when the snow actually stays on the ground long enough before it melts away. The rest of the Winter though is usually cold, windy, rainy and miserable - not very nice to be out in.

Lights on in house at 4.20pm. Pitch black dark outside now and it's going to get worse.

Horribly depressing times.

Curtains drawn. lights dimmed and watching the tv with a hot drink. Love the dark nights. All whats missing is a light dusting of snow

It is hardly the EU's time zone, because the EU spreads across 3 zones from Portugal and Ireland on the same as us to several in the east on UK time+2h.

Express at it again.

Since when have they been right. They have just added 20 days to the 100 days of snow that they said we in for last season

One thing about the dark night is that we can shut the world out when the curtains are closed

You can do that any time though. I do. That's what curtains are for.

Can't believe it... it's not even 3 p.m. and it's getting very gloomy here already. I'm gonna have to have to put the lights on the ceiling.
