Been a bit lighter these last couple days with the streetlights not coming on till 4. The skies have been clearer, and yesterday, and I saw the sun setting at 3:15pm, by 3:30pm, It had disappeared behind the hill (I live in a hilly area). At 5pm today I could still see some blue in the sky. It really does make a difference when the weathers not so grim!

However, here in the West of England, we've had some days so dull that full lighting has to be put in the office or home as early as 2.30pm - not good.

I'm in Northern Ireland and it's dark at 4:30, much better than East Anglia where it was dark at 3:30.

It's horrendous in the mornings though, it doesn't even remotely start to get bright until 8:30am.

Its awful. I don't recall a November being this absolutely miserable. It's done nothing but chuck down with rain every day now for 6 weeks and yesterday I had to close the curtains and put the light on at 3 in the afternoon is was so dark.

I genuinely find it depressing. You wake up open the curtains and just deflate because it's STILL dark and raining.
It's not really dark in England in the morning. I got the bus to Stansted on Sunday morning and it was getting bright around 7:20 which is a lot earlier than here.

One thing that i like about the long nights is that you can draw the curtains when its raining and windy outside

It is going to be a very long winter if we are destined to be pounded by weather front after weather front bringing unseasonal mild temps and flooding thanks to the jet stream.

One bit of comfort is that the nights will beginning drawing out a week on monday 21
Not really. We still have awful sunset times in January.

Yes. I kinda like the extremes in daylight we have. I wish they were even more more extreme though. I'd love to live further north such as The Shetland Islands or even Iceland where it stays at twilight in the summer and hardly get light in the winter. Around the equinox when it gets light at 6-7am and dark at 6-7pm is just too boring.
I also like how the twilight phase (the period between sunset and nightfall or first light and sunrise) is much longer the further north you go.

In fact twilight is shortest at the equinox's and longest at the summer solstice, but in the winter it is a bit longer too. Where I live, around the equinox, the period from sunrise/sunset to the beginning/end of nautical twilight (I don't count astro twilight because it is pitch black then anyway) is just over an hour but in winter It is 1 hour and 30 minutes (45 mins of civil twilight and 45 mins of dawn/dusk). It compares nothing to the summer of course when it's light half the night but there you go.

You can see the times of dawn/dusk here: http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/manchester.html
http://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/uk/manchester

I've got used to the dark nights now. Now I have to come to terms to the fact the days are going to get longer again, and the daylight will be more "normal" again, NOOOOOOOO!!!
No, I live in Northern Ireland and it's quite extreme here. In the summer it's not dark until past 11pm and then it's bright again at 3am, it's really annoying especially when you've been out the previous night and come in and it's bright already.

I like it for about 2 weeks and then it gets annoying.

Been really mild today (14C) with no rain but it has been very overcast and gloomy. It is so mild I even went out in a hoodie and football shorts today and I was fine. But we had the light on till 12 today, put it back on at 3 though as it's just so gloomy. Streetlights have been on since 3:30pm, and now the house is just in darkness and it's not even 4 yet. This has to be one of the darkest days so far. Not complaining about the exceptionally mild weather though.

Darkness in winter travels north east to south west. So it gets dark earlier the further north you are. 1614 plymouth and 1456 in lerwick.

Been to toilet today?

Glad you like the updates, I'll post some more.

First question: No.

Second question: Yes! Several times.

Would you like to know any more?

Yes, that's true. The further east you are the earlier the sunrises but the earlier the sunsets. Over to the west they get later sunsets but later sunrises.

Also, the further north you are, the shorter the days are, however in summer, the reverse is true (the north get longer days and the south shorter ones).

So the daylight hours vary more across the year in the north than the south.

All in all though over the course of the year we all get the same amount of daylight, no matter where you live.

Personally I prefer more difference in daylight hours throughout the year.

Why are you posting a daily diary/blog about what time you leave the house and what time you turn your lights on?

From 1940 until about 1947 the clocks were not put back during the winter but were advanced by an hour during the summer giving "double summer time" This was done to save fuel.

Some people referred to it as "Mad time"

It'll be a glacially slow process at first, speeding up by February.
Indeed, and if you want to impress the relatives you will point out that the graph of daylight versus time is roughly a sine curve and that the summer and winter solstices are maxima/minima, which a bit of calculus will tell you are points where the rate of change of the variable (hours of daylight) is zero. Also, the equinoxes are points of inflection where the rate of change is maximum.

Actually, when I try this approach all I get are pitying looks.

It's the shortest day today (just in case you didn't know already)

Went dark really early on Saturday, streetlights were on by 3:30 but the light was already fading at 3pm.

Sunday and today are better though. Alough the weather has cooled down now we've had two sunny mornings and clear nights. The sun was still only just rising above the horizon at 10am this morning. Then it clouded over and became miserable and gloomy, and it rained (no surprise there) and guess what... Yes, you guessed it, I had to the light on..

It's really cleared up again this afternoon. Haven't seen a December sunset yet, but I hopefully I will by the end of the month.

Clear sky now, I can see a beautiful 3/4 moon out of the window from my computer screen right now. lights been fading since 3pm but streetlights not come on till 4pm. Nice sky in the west, it's only just turned dusk now, on Saturday it was practically completely dark at this time. Certainly makes a difference when the sky's clear.

Leachies daily diary is starting to rival Anne Frank and Samual Pepys.

Almost poetic there.

Imagine of the nutters who want CET got their way. It would be Sunrise at 9:30am.

No it is the shortest day tomorrow (Tuesday 22 December) which is when the winter solstice occurs.

At the moment my sunrise is 8:51am so that would be diabolical. Some mornings I actually think we should (where I live) go back another hour because it's so dark here in the mornings...

Like if you get up at 7am it's dark for ages after that. When I used to go to Secondary school in the winter it was very common for me to wake up at 7/8 and still think it's night.

That is exactly how it was from 1968 to 1971

No doubt it was the same from 1940 to 1947
