16:20 in leeds - still light. Yes light at the end of the tunnel. I feel like for the first time I have developed S.A.D this year starting in November (after clocks went back).

Yeah, noticed it stayed lighter later tonight too. Thought it wouldn't do as the light seemed to start to fade just after 3pm, but then it didn't get any darker till after 4pm.

Very dark today with sleet and snow showers. Had lamp on at midday then sky cleared and sun blasted in window so I closed blind.

Out driving at 4pm and I had car lights on.

I switched on a lamp in the living room at 2.05pm today, and the ceiling light in the kitchen at 2.30 when I made tea.

Seems like you are getting the hang of this thread now!

Not a flake of snow today even though it was forecast to fall this morning

Clear and sunny today. Official sunset time for my area is now 4:15 but because I live in a hilly area sunset is always quite a bit earlier - today the sun disappeared behind the horizon at around 4pm.

I'm wondering how this affects the process of it going dark (twilight)?
I've been looking at the twilight times of my area here: http://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/uk/blackburn

So, I have a few questions.

1. Do hilly places have less daylight, or just less sunshine?

2. In hilly areas, does Civil Twilight begin at the official sunset time for that area (as posted on weather websites) or when the sun actually dips below the horizon?

3. In hilly areas, does twilight finish sooner as the sun went behind the horizon sooner?

3. Does twilight last longer or shorter in hilly areas?

Yes, it was still pretty light then for me too, but boy did it go really dark earlier. It's been clear skies up until after lunch. Saw the sun pop up over the horizon just before 8:45am this morning (official time is now 8:20am for my area but because of the hills sunrise is later).

I was eating my lunch in the sunshine, then I went into the gym. When I came out, it was before 3pm, and it was going dark already. You could see nothing but dark grey cloud. What a difference. Some streetlights were starting to come on. There was heavy sleet coming down too.

But by 4pm it had cleared up.

There's still some light in the sky as I write this and the New Moon is beautifully bright. When it's dark and rainy at 3pm but then the sky clears it seems to take a long time for it to go fully dark. The reverse happens when the sky's clear then as it starts to go dark it clouds over which makes it go dark even quicker.

Started Snowing at 3pm in Lancashire today. At first It was only flaky stuff but it soon thickened up and started to stick. Main Roads still pretty clear as of now but side streets snowed up.

Began to go dark at 3pm as it clouded over and the streetlights slowly begun to turn on. Turned dark quite slowly today as it did start to go dark early but of course the snow has meant it's stayed lighter a bit longer as it reflects the light...

Hasn't really gone fully dark till now but even though it's now night it still seems lighter at night with snow on the ground.. Maybe it reflects the streetlights?

It really is lighter at night when it's Snowy. Last night at midnight, I could make out the distant fields and hills a few miles away. Usually the horizon and surrounding hills are invisible but it was very distinct last night. In fact even tonight I can still make out the white fields, as not much snow has melted today.

Sleeted at 3pm today but it didn't last long. Checked several weather apps and they are forecasting 2-3 degrees tomorrow morning but rain??? Hopefully that is not true. Last Sunday morning last week was not forecast for snow but we got some so fingers crossed...

What is this obsession with snow, you sound like an overgrown school kid.
Consider the populus that have to travel to work for a living, maybe to support you

It's Blue Monday today, Officially, The Most Depressing Day Of The Year.

Being Blue Monday it's been dull all day and started going dark early tonight.
The sky seemed to be more blue than grey as it was going dark this afternoon.

Most of the snow has melted where I am now, this this Blue Monday is even more blue for me

Weather set to go back to being mild, wet and windy later this week

Been a clear sunny day all day today. Not a cloud in the sky. What I call Perfect Weather. It was really foggy this morning though at dawn, but as sunrise came it suddenly cleared. Saw the sunrise and the sunset today, both at about 8:40am and 4:10pm respectively.

It's just turned dusk now, and it's beautiful. At one side of the sky I can see the moon where it is going a deep blue and the other side there is a beautiful yellowy glow over the hills. Love this time of year as it can be clear skies but only 1 degree warm!

Been mild this weekend. Weather set to be mild and wet all next week too. Evenings still don't seem to be that much lighter though. The first streetlight came on at 3:30pm today, and when I came out the Swimming baths at 5:30pm, it was pitch black.

Not at all.

Mind you I wonder about your obs powers. There is stil light left at 5pm now.

The sun is setting nearly a whole hour later than on December 13, 2015

Sunset will be 5pm on February 7

Been a "four seasons in one day" type of day today.

Weather has been all over the place. One minute Sunshining, One minute Sleeting, Next minute Hailing, and then Snowing.
Typical British Weather...

Been Snowing on and off for the last hour. It's now patchy on the ground, and thicker up on the hills.

Now it's gone quite dark and overcast.

Very much so.

Still a bit of blue in the sky towards the west at 6pm tonight. Mornings are noticeably lighter too. It's now almost fully light when I wake up now. Only negative of the lengthening days is that the length of twilight (or the time from first light to sunrise or from sunset to nightfall) is shorter, meaning that it gets light quicker in the mornings and goes dark quicker in the evenings.

Where I live, around the winter solstice we get 45 minutes of civil twilight and 45 minutes of nautical twilight, but by the equinox this is reduced to about 35 minutes for each.

Still as we pass the equinox and go into summer we start to get those beautiful long twilights where it's like midnight and the sky is a deep blue tinge and you can still see a glow towards the northern horizon.

Pretty much dark here. It was basically day at home to quarter to six yesterday.

Disappointing.

Lovely clear sky here as twilight is just turning to dusk here. Makes a lovely change to all this rain. Twilight period is still a reasonable length. I don't like it so much when it gets to the equinox because it just goes from day to night and night to day too fast. Twilight and dusk are my favourite times of day. Would love to live somewhere far north where twilight lasts for like 3 hours or more.
