One Direction - boyband successors
Now One Direction are going on hiatus who from their shadow do we think will become the biggest boyband in the UK or Worldwide?
Historically when a major boyband falls away groups who have been lower down in the shadows engineer themselves as the premier boyband. Most notably Boyzone after Take That but also Westlife after Boyone etc etc and so on. With One Direction stranglehold on the boyband market about to be lifted who is it likely to be? 5 Seconds of Summer, The Vamps, Union J, Hometown or a new boyband formed by a pop manager Simon Cowell/X Factor? |

I think by default it goes to 5SOS who are performing relatively well (although not in comparison to 1D obviously) internationally.
Union J I don't hold out much hope for, The Vamps too. |

I posted a thread yesterday about The Vamps.
Comparing their latest album to 1D's, it blows it out of the water. There's something there for everyone from ballads to rap to upbeat numbers. They're a nice group of guys too, they never seem to be misbehaving in any articles. I did really like 5SOS, their first album was amazing but now they've gone all Greenday on me and I don't particularly like it. They're aiming to a completely different market to 1D's now. So for me, it's The Vamps. Good solid pop with the occasional curveball thrown in and good looking guys too (well...Brad is!) |

I agree I think 5SOS will automatically go to #1. I think they are in the vein of Busted and catered directly to the teen press. The songs including the recent ones still sound pop and not authentic pop punk. If they wanted to be Blink 182,Green Day,Good Charlotte they wouldn't have done all of the teen press and toured with One Direction. None of those bands ever spoke to any teen press or were merchandised to children/pre teens in the way 5SOS are.
I think it's more interesting in the UK though who will be the top boyband. I think now George from Union J is getting attention/popularity in I'm a Celeb they have a member who is recognisable to the wider public. If they get songs of the quality of One Directions I think they could take that spot but it's a lot of if's with them. The Vamps for some reason I don't see them becoming as big as Busted/McFly were before them. Hometown considering Boyzone and Westlife both became the top boyband act in Britain may surprise. Yes they have currently tanked in the UK but i'm sure initially Boyzone did unless I'm mistaken. With Louis contacts and knowing the industry I wouldn't rule them out either. Interestingly for the first time in a few years there are no boybands in the X Factor so no clues there. It could also be an American boyband as it's never too long until one big US boyband comes along. It's amazing no US boybands were assembled during 1D time at the top to challenge them. |

5SOS, but they won't come even halfway to the heights 1D reached. 1D will be the last huge boy band for a while.

It won't be Union J, that's for sure. Their music just isn't good enough.
The Vamps music is fantastic but they don't seem to resonate for some reason. 5SOS; their music isn't good enough either. So I think it will be an entirely new boyband who takes over at some point in future. |

How about Rixton? They seem to be getting a lot of exposure at the moment and are a very good band live.

I actually think the boyband market has become quite saturated over the last couple of years we might have a period in 2016 where there aren't many boybands dominating.

It would be nice if a girlband really exploded.

Union J I don't hold out much hope for, The Vamps too. The last two singles sold poorly too. I also wouldn't consider them a boyband. |
