Have you heard or read about anyone in this category?
Do you think it matters?
Do you know of a really nice but talented musician?

Let's be careful- if they are complete tossers they might sue!!

Prince certainly comes across as fitting the description.

I can forgive the "jerkiness" of any musician if their work is "sublime."

You only have to listen to their recordings. If they sound like a jerk on that, then they truly are a jerk.

Van Morrison is a complete grump but his music really is sublime at times.

Bryan Adams is a really nice person but then his music is seldom sublime.

I won't name names, but my mate had a musical hero since his primary school days who he met about 2 years ago and thought that he was a complete t*sser.

The same friend had previously met another musical hero - now deceased - who turned out to be extremely rude and ignorant towards a small group of fans trying to speak to him.

He's mow decided never to meet any of his heroes ever again - though he has met several of his footballing heroes and not been disappointed so maybe it's a rock star thing

I suppose its like this in every walk of life. But we all like to think beautiful music should come from beautiful people and then when we find it doesn't it leaves a nasty taste.
I've read about a couple who could be in the 'jerk but sublime' category-
1. Blonde, chubby, megastar currently in the news.
2. Extremely tall drummer from the 60's whose band leader had a breakdown and he was very mean to him.
Met the guys from MUD! Stars inevery sense!
Met Incredible String Band- ditto.

Indeed.

His '80s to early '90s output was largely sublime, for sure.

Ike Turner. He was an awful man, used to Knock poor Tina around something rotten, but dammit if his material for Ike and Tina and the Ikettes isn't some of my favourite music ever.

if you meet any particular person just once, you will usually form an opinion based on that meeting, but the person could have been in a particularly good or bad mood at that time, and not normally like that

I've met a few talented musicians who were genuinely nice, and I can see how being nice has probably got them very far as they may be a pleasure to work with, as well as being talented

I've also met prince...

And what was he like? actually I can imagine it will be very much dependent on his mood at the time.

Liam Gallagher seems like an obvious one, although it could be argued that Noel is the more talented brother.

Axl Rose is another name I'll throw in. There's absolutely no doubt about how much of a prick he is, but Guns N Roses have some amazing songs.

Never heard anything positive about Van Morrison. A friend of mine is a lifelong fan of his, and just so happened to see him in a pub alone one day, so he says he approached him saying "I don't mean to bother you, but I just want to say thankyou for your music which has always been special for me." Van, without even turning his head, told him to f**k off. Unnecessary.

You can never really tell who is nice and who is less so from perception alone, for example Pete Doherty is apparently one of the friendliest and most approachable musicians going.

From experience; Brian May, Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Jessie J, Mick Harvey, Jim Sclavunos and Tjinder Singh are all very nice.

I'd be disappointed if I met Van and he didn't tell me to **** off!

Any I've met, I've either not had enough dealings with them to be able to determine their character, or else have been friendly and down to earth. Sharon Jones of 'Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings' was particularly sweet, coming out to hug and dance with us after a gig.

Plenty of people whose music I love have poor to terrible private reputations: the difficult to work with / the alcohol and drug dependent / misogynists / real life pimps / rapists/ underage sex offenders / kidnappers / coke dealers / murderers, even an alleged people trafficker but it's all music and many are deceased so no longer harming themselves or others.

While the unsavoury private lives of some are always in the spotlight quite a lot of others remain much more under the radar. There are plenty of bad people in the music business and feuds where family members will stop speaking or sue each other.

A musician I chat to via the web who has played with just about all the big names in his chosen genre over the last 25 years has plenty of insight into the true character of many of the artists in that genre we both love but he doesn't discuss any of the negative stuff online for obvious reasons.

Apparently Lou Reed was a real asshole and really rude to people. Incredible legendary artist though. Damon Albarn is an arrogant prat too! Some of the best artists are temperamental gits though. Isn't Barbra Streisand meant to be a real witch diva? One of the greatest singers ever though. Mariah Carey is a real sweetie to her fans, on the other hand. Not the diva people expect. I also found Sting very up himself and arrogant. Courtney Love is really fun and approachable, although she wasn't exactly sober when I met her, lol. I've heard Madonna can be quite rude to people. She's still my idol though, but I wouldn't want to meet her, lol.

A story Ive heard about Van Morrison is that when hes in Belfast he likes to visit a lovely Coffee bar in the Botanic area, where he has his own reserved seat in the corner. One particular morning he arrived in only to find a student sitting in his favourite corner , the staff were shocked "that someone was sitting in Mr Morrisons chair", but Van didnt mind and sat down opposite the student who was stuck in a textbook. Van inquired to the student what he was studying and a conversation began between them.Obviously all the staff were intrigued as to what was happening with "grumpy Mr Morrison".

The student asked Van "what do you do?"

Van replied "Im a musician"

Student Replied " cool , you make any money" totally oblivious to whom he was talking to.

After another 5 minutes of chit chat the student packed up his books , wished Van all the best and left, still no wiser to whom he was chatting with. Van left with the usual sour grumpy face not saying a word.

True story

Seen him live a few times but one show he did at Doncaster Dome many moons ago sticks out in the memory because he clearly didn't want to be there (this was when he had Brian Kennedy in the band) BUT he was still bloody brilliant! Grumpy as heck though. What's that old saying? 'Talent does what it can, but genius does what it must' Fits SIR George Morrison to a tee.

I met noel and thought he was going to be a tosser but he was completely sound. very nice bloke. he's been at a couple of events I was at, and I've later read things in the papers about him and the papers just completely misunderstood and twisted his words. mind he's very sarcastic, so when asked what he thought of something he replied "load of shite" and that's what the papers reported. he was telling me he had one of the best nights of his life, he found out last minute, his wife persuaded him to go as he couldn't be bothered with the last minute nature, and he couldn't believe how good it was. but he wouldn't say that to the press. after the other event he actually wrote an article about it for a music mag a he was so impressed. after the first he said he wasn't going again as he didn't want to be disappointed and didn't think the next time would be better, but he loved the second time more

axl rose though, I've never met him but he's kept me waiting hours to see him live, and when I find out some of the reasons why he's late on stage he just comes across as arrogant. I think he does it to try and keep up the rock n roll persona, as it was 20 years ago he had his last real hits

I've met him a few times over the years, before and after the JW conversion and right in the middle of the peak. he can be really nice at times, and throw shade at other times. typically he won't be too nasty to your face, but do it behind your back, especially if other people are around who aren't on the payroll

I'd imagine he's not too nice to the press and bouncers and suchlike but whenever I've heard about fans and normal folk meeting him they've all said he's actually sound and has time for people.

Ted Nugent springs to mind. A right wing extremist gun nutter, but I love his music.
Same goes for Dave Mustaine of Megadeth.
