That isn't as easy as you might think. My older family members have been trying to downsize from their 3 bedroom semi to a 2 bedroom property for the past 4 years. To start with there are very few 2 bd props around so prices remain at a premium, and by the time they have forked out the nigh on £20,000 it costs to move (solicitors, surveys, estate agents, removal vans, etc) they would need to take on a mortgage which is impossible for couple in their 70s.
The majority of the lump sum you pay out when you move is estate agent's fees so they're built into the sale price. Removals van, conveyancing fees etc are small beer by comparison. We've all moved house more than once I'm sure and are well aware of the costs.

Yes, houses bought years ago are worth thousands & thousands more than the original sale price, but unless people managed to buy outright using cash, then the original price is not what they will have paid in real terms. At one time interest rates were up to 17% - unlike todays almost nothing - and multiply that by the average 25 years, and you'll find their houses were not that cheap after all.
Many have paid-off assets that are worth hundreds of thousands, a million plus in some cases and they complain just as loudly as the rest about free bus passes and TV licences. I'm describing my mum and all her friends there but with a hefty dollop of added racism. Guess which way they ALL voted in the referendum?

Very few pensioners are living a life of luxury as you feel they are...
I never mentioned "a life of luxury". You did.

.....and I have feeling when you hit say 65 you would be ok with being murdered by the state to free up a house and money for someone younger when you have worked all your life for yours.

Or maybe you will show how things should work and lead by example ?
It was a joke. Someone laughed at it. Do you know what a joke is?

oooh we need to run a book on this. Who is missing? Woman who always sports jaunty beret/cap? Very made up older woman with blonde hair? Unconvincing transvestite or indeed The Grimbo herself? I think we should be told
I notice one of "the regulars" on Celeb Big Bro's Bit On The Side for 2 consecutive nights. Maybe it's her?

I never said they did. That was you.
Yes you didn't use the words "extreme wealth as you seem to imagine", you just took it a whole stage further by saying, "I love hearing greedy xenophobic Brexit pensioners moaning about how hard-up they are in their paid-for homes worth hundreds of thousands, or millions even, that they paid buttons for decades ago." Then went on to denigrate further by stating they will "happily see the coming generation in permanent poverty as long as it meant they could have another £20 a week to spend on Fondant Fancies and horrible cardigans."

Your words not mine.

I don't understand this trend for raging against pensioners as lifestyles of the elderly never ever concerned me from my teens all the way through my work life. I never felt envy or bitterness as you appear to, i just hoped that i might get to enjoy a few years of retirement which i'd worked damned hard for.

Do they all live in castles or something? Moat-cleaning costs dragging them down or are you talking about sporadic general running costs we all have to bear? If they can't afford to live in an empty house that's now worth hundreds of thousands due to an increase in value then sell it and downsize, freeing up some cash they can then plough into Werthers Originals shares or coats for their tiny dogs.
Those 'sporadic general running costs' you refer to are exactly what you will pay whether earning a salary or on a pension. The difference being when living on a basic state pension you won't have the luxury of that disposable income you enjoyed when salaried.

And why shouldn't it?

Ooh...Karma Chameleon is it? Nah, I'll never be a xenophobic pensioner thinking the world owes me a living just because I'm old.
Just a bitter person who thinks pensioners are 'greedy xenophobic Brexiters moaning about how hard-up they are in their paid-for homes worth hundreds of thousands, or millions even, that they paid buttons for decades ago.' Yes that was what you said. Not my words.

You will get your opportunity because one thing i can assure you of, it sneaks up on you a heck of a lot faster than you think and when you do reach that time to draw your pension, you will be wearing a very different hat to what you are now.

You seem to have forgotten that when they paid what you call buttons their salary was not what it is today so they were in the same situation with cashflow but much higher interest rates.

Very few pensioners are living a life of luxury as you feel they are and I have feeling when you hit say 65 you would be ok with being murdered by the state to free up a house and money for someone younger when you have worked all your life for yours.

Or maybe you will show how things should work and lead by example ?
If state sanctioned euthanasia became law for 65 year olds i've a feeling the Strakers of this world would either emigrate or become conscientious objectors!

I know. I remember writing it so there's no need to repeat it twice in the one post is there?

Yes, Shazia...It was a bloody stupid title for your tour.

Wozzer gone after today. The Bayswater, cheese-selling stores nearby can breathe easy from tomorrow. No need for that extra store-detective.

I phoned Trades Descriptions and they said that due to the massive volume of complaints they're looking into the use of both "Top" AND "comic" as they see no evidence to support either!

Jody talking to Woz about CHEEEESE! She likes a Blue Stilton she says as Woz squirms in his seat!

Primrose Hill???? He always gives the impression of living in the low end of a grubby street in Camden Town! Typical! I know Belsize Park fought off MacDonalds a few years ago. The one in Dalston is full of Pensioners who pop in everyday for a coffee and mingle.

No need to put any words in your mouth as you've always got plenty to say.

You need reminding.

Sheesh! Who's BITTER now??
Judging from your rage on pensioners, you.

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/...hare-uk-wealth

The Resolution Foundation figures show the recently retired now hold more wealth, despite there being more than twice as many households headed by someone aged 16-44. Recent retirees accounted in 2010-2012 for almost a fifth (19% ) of the UK’s total household wealth, despite making up only 14% of all households.

The average wealth of a household in the 16 to 44 age bracket in 2012 was £179,000, and for those aged 65-74 was £540,000.

Just two of the thirty areas with the highest share of over 65s voted to Remain - South Lakeland in the North West and South Hams in the South West. Every other older area voted for Brexit.

A recent study has found that the majority of Britain’s elderly residents are living on nothing more than Werther’s Originals.

I would have thought that was pretty obvious , those retiring now are from the time when people were buying their own houses so therefore along with savings chances are they will have more at the age of 65 than someone between 20 and 50 years younger than them.

Sometimes you'd swear he was living in a rat infested squat on some drug riddled council estate near kings cross working for peanuts whilst reading the socialist worker all day with all the moaning he does. He doesn't like it when a panelist or a guest spills the beans on where he lives. Its quite funny when it happens though.

Logan's Run had the right idea, just the wrong age-point!
I like Fondant Fancies but all my cardies are nice.
