So although there is an element of truth to it, the reality isn't quite what you'd imagine it to be.
The problem with stats is that they aren't always the truth in themselves, it all depends on how a person interprets them.
What sounds like a simple question which has a definitive answer can in actual fact be broader than what it seems and be misinterpreted.
Like you we all make that mistake about a subject we are unfamiliar with. The news reports something and we tend to absorb it, especially if it's repeated often enough to us. I'm probably as guilty of that as anybody else. Most of us just don't have the time to scrutinise whatever gets reported in the media that closely, and much of it must just sinks in and becomes a belief.
