I can't dispute your sad memories of times past on your holidays.

My parents always seemed to make it fun and explore the delights of the UK and the continent. Back in those days tv was not a 24/7 activity, especially during the day when the 'test card' was a regular feature!!
As for Dr Who, it was on at around 5:05pm after the football results on a Saturday, and was only a 25 minute programme. I was always facinated with the Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart who I always thought he looked like the BBC tv newsreader Richard Whitmore.
These days there are far too many tv programmes available to make any of them memorable.
