The faffing wasn't that long, about 20 seconds or so, and most of that was the Charleston element of the QS, just not facing each other. Had they done a 20 second Charleston bit in the middle Len would never have mentioned it, as it's part of the dance.

Not appreciating thoughts of where the screenplay for Ore's storyline arc will bring us next week:
Week 3: The ghost of Gene Kelly shakes the glittery raindrops off Ore's umbrella and pats him on the back (production notes: play down Cloudier's cool Charleston, but big up Danny's soft appels and naff capework) Week 4: The judges laud Ore for bettering the BEST JIVE EVAH in Strictly history (production notes: play down and undermark Danny's sparkling quickstep, but big up Ore's hammy woobie lip rub at the end of the dance and ensuing optical leakage) Week 5: The nation rises up to hail Ore as he bounces his way to samba roll greatness and delivers an I Have a Dream speech of Luther-King–like eloquence (production notes: play down Rinder's breakthrough serious performance, but big up Ore's absolutely-complete-novice-never-danced-no-siree-not-me J******) |

Just counted - it took 29 seconds from the music starting for them to get into hold. That's a lot of faffing - if Len can call Joanne out on it in week 1 then he can call Oti out for it in week 4. The tonal appropriateness is another matter.

Although unfortunately not in a good way.
For me the issue is - which dance will I remember? Which dance will stand the annals of time due to it's class, it's motion, it's design, the way it was sold? For me, Danny's Quickstep will last longer in the memory than Ore's Jive. Just to make clear - you think she looks good as a Christmas Day turkey? ![]() |

Sometimes they add to a total time to compensate for some elaborate intro, but this would be a third of the time faffing. My rule of thumb is if I am getting bored and feel they should be dancing already, it's too long. This was too long.

If they really are so intent on every dance having a story, then all scene-setting should take place before before the music starts (or allowed up to 10 seconds within allotted dance time). So they can faff, set their scene, music starts and it's 90 seconds of dance. I wonder if celebs from previous series watch now and say "in my day we had to do 90 seconds of VW, try not puking after that". It must be unrecognisable to them.
In that section about Peggy Spencer (I'm assuming Will was originally scheduled to appear then so desperate filler needed, what with that and the makeup section), they showed Len criticising someone in the first series, saying they needed to maintain hold throughout the entire dance. I was actually a little surprised they showed that, as that's anything but the case now! |

For me any second in VW spent out of hold is faffing. As simple as it looks, it's most effective for me just like that, leave the wafting and other faffing out of it
It does not need improvement.

*De-lurks*
Hello DOTS... Just wanted to drop by in among all the furore about quicksteps and jives. My 'Strictly' un-appreciation is now reduced to.... *Reading this thread and fast-fast-forwarding though the main show and picking out the best/worst bits as referenced by yourselves. *Reading Monkseal's blog I've done this for a couple of seasons now as I was cultivating 'anger issues' by watching the show. The television was in grave danger of serious assault. (as its Mr Le Clerc's pride and joy, I felt I needed to step away from the show) My un-appreciation was rising to uncontrollable levels. Main offenders.... *The 'Judges' ?!? *Len - 'I'd like to pickle YOUR walnuts and then some' - Goodwin...in particular *The Bloody Cliftons...like the start of 'The Seven Plagues of Egypt'..how many more?? *The 'singers' ...some of them should be shot and put out of their misery *Tess...just Tess. *Brenda's arse...you could set a tea tray on it... (Greg take note...you could get a tea trolley on yours) *The guest 'performers' and whichever dancers fanny about in front of them *Prop-ology *Twee-ology *Fun-funnity-fun-ology ...and lots, lots more. Keep up the stellar un-appreciating DOTS...its the true spirit of 'Strictly' |

As far as I know, elbowing someone off a park bench as Joanne did , is not a recognised Tango move! |

I like that image of Oti.
However, I fear Kevin may be so incensed at the apparent dismissal of Louise having any sort of chance of winning that he dials up the saccharine twee to levels that result in spontaneous tooth decay across the nation and a crisis in dental services across the land.Quote:
29 seconds to get into hold, but they were doing in sync Charleston steps (out of hold) at 10 seconds, which is a legit step within QS.

It may be wishful thinking on my part, but I think if you showed me that 29 seconds without music and said "Guess which dance they go into", I'd go for quickstep. Ask me the same question after the bench shoving and I think I'd struggle to come up with a credible guess from across the entire spectrum of dance.

Not appreciating the comming 'journey' story about Ore
first two weeks average to the next weeks being compared to Gene Kelly and the best jive eva more of a ringa than the ringiest ringer seen on strictly the pretence of being so so to 10s in the first few weeks is lying to the public at least other ringers have been constant from the start but I suppose they where honest about their ability and didnt want the story of the journey |

Wasn't that fond of the jive, but that was more down to the choreography, but Ore did very well and obviously has loads of natural ability, but I've seen no evidence of him being a ringer, beyond Shimmy Jimmy stating it as a FACT, with nothing backing it up. |

If bicyle-riding, glasses-wearing and bench-shoving are recognised Tango moves, then I am an excellent Tango dancer

I just liked Danny's dance more, but a point either way was fair enough. I just didn't think it was 3 points different - especially when one of those points was basically our Head Judge waving his paddle and going ner, ner, nah, ner, ner. (Individually, I like Ore more than Danny, but prefer Danny with Oti over Ore with Jwann. Nothing if not contrary) |

I thought he was a Sports Science bod? He's at the stage now where he's had what? 2 months of training? So even a NDB with natural ability is going to be sneaking ahead (and Jwann does seem to be a good teacher). I think the issues with the Tango and Cha cha were more to do with the themeing and choreography than anything else.
