Long, long ago in a studio far, far away ...
Main players:
Tom Chambers (Smug vicar)
Rachel Stevens (Rachbot)
Lisa Snowden (NotClooney)
Austen Healy (Wuz Robbed).
Same as this series with a tactical withdrawal from John Sargent*, it meant the later stages were a bit light, especially with the dance off. Rachel and Lisa were judges favourites, but less so with the public Quarter final, two dance week. Brendan plays a tactical card and concentrates on the waltz with Lisa, scoring 40. Bottom 2 are Austen and Lisa with Austen having tomdance off against a 40 scoring Waltz, so Wuz Robbed, then and forever.
Fast forward a week to a 3 person semi final - with the dance off still a thing going to happen. The judges manage to score Lisa and Rachel the same meaning:
Rachel = 3 points
Lisa = 3 points
Tom = 1 point.
Bearing in mind from the minute the phone lines opened the line was 'vote to save your favourite from the dance off' with those numbers that couldn't happen. Even if Tom topped the public vote (which he fairly obviously was) he couldn't avoid the dance off. Coupled with that, it was also fairly clear that in a dance off - he would go. Much stressing at Strictly Towers and consulting of the famous Big Book Of Strictly Rules Written On The Hoof resulted in no elimination and all the votes and scores being rolled over to the final. As a result of that, the tied points have been weighted towards the couple at the bottom of the board rather than the top.
So we had a 3 couple final and the gloriousness of Bacofoil.
(* it should be mentioned that the JS situation had led to a very grumpy series before that. While he was in, he was getting flak for getting the public vote and going through while better dancers went home. When he pulled out he got flak for not respecting the public vote. James Jordan held both of these views simultaneously on a couple of special edition ITT's which have yet to be beaten)”

And bleats quietly, ALL of that could and still can be avoided if the DO was abolished

That is hilarious. I can imagine the backstage ructions when that particular bit of nonsense flared up. Who broke the glad tidings that Tom could not possibly avoid the DO I wonder?”
