Ooh, how long have you got
. Flexes fingers.Grab a chaise lounge and a glass of your choice young padawan while we begin your history lesson ![]() Long, long ago in a studio far, far away ... Main players: Tom Chambers (Smug vicar) Rachel Stevens (Rachbot) Lisa Snowden (NotClooney) Austen Healy (Wuz Robbed). Same as this series with a tactical withdrawal from John Sargent*, it meant the later stages were a bit light, especially with the dance off. Rachel and Lisa were judges favourites, but less so with the public Quarter final, two dance week. Brendan plays a tactical card and concentrates on the waltz with Lisa, scoring 40. Bottom 2 are Austen and Lisa with Austen having tomdance off against a 40 scoring Waltz, so Wuz Robbed, then and forever. Fast forward a week to a 3 person semi final - with the dance off still a thing going to happen. The judges manage to score Lisa and Rachel the same meaning: Rachel = 3 points Lisa = 3 points Tom = 1 point. Bearing in mind from the minute the phone lines opened the line was 'vote to save your favourite from the dance off' with those numbers that couldn't happen. Even if Tom topped the public vote (which he fairly obviously was) he couldn't avoid the dance off. Coupled with that, it was also fairly clear that in a dance off - he would go. Much stressing at Strictly Towers and consulting of the famous Big Book Of Strictly Rules Written On The Hoof resulted in no elimination and all the votes and scores being rolled over to the final. As a result of that, the tied points have been weighted towards the couple at the bottom of the board rather than the top. So we had a 3 couple final and the gloriousness of Bacofoil. (* it should be mentioned that the JS situation had led to a very grumpy series before that. While he was in, he was getting flak for getting the public vote and going through while better dancers went home. When he pulled out he got flak for not respecting the public vote. James Jordan held both of these views simultaneously on a couple of special edition ITT's which have yet to be beaten) And bleats quietly, ALL of that could and still can be avoided if the DO was abolished

See, this is what I don't understand. Why did Austen have to perform his weaker Latin against Lisa's stronger ballroom? Austen's other dance that week was very good - why wasn't he allowed to use that one in the dance off?
![]() Both of Austen's dances scored less - he had a 34 & 36. Basically, he was toast whatever he did. |

DO is very useful for allowing the judges to keep in good dancers (and, unfortunately, judges' pets) who might otherwise be eliminated by accident (we've all seen times where sometimes a good dancer falls into the B2 because people don't realize their favourite is in danger). The other way to do things, of course, is to insist on the other 3 judges using their full range of paddles.
And we may think of Jay's Jive, Kartem's rumba, Alesha's cha cha etc. being Strictly gold, but nothing compares to bacofoil ![]() ![]() All that happens with the dance off is that the 'unsafe' area is pushed higher. Rather than trying to keep your favourite from being dead last - it goes up to 'out the bottom 2' which means that celebs who are second and even third from bottom get a vote boost. |

I think DS crashed (it did that a lot that series) and the batphone started to ring off the hook in Strictly Towers. Fun times

I seem to remember it had been talked about in a 'ha, ha imagine if' sort of way for the week before - but as soon as the leaderboard was finalised it went a bit crackers

I can pinpoint down to the second of that transcript my first moment of actually ever liking Anton (then of course Series 7 and 8 happened and it took a while to come back again..). |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAZ0nOmfWwY Now I cannot unsee it and I will never think of Brenda the same way again. What the hell kind of evil gremlins leapt into his brain and birthed that? Maybe it's better not to know. |

That is hilarious. I can imagine the backstage ructions when that particular bit of nonsense flared up. Who broke the glad tidings that Tom could not possibly avoid the DO I wonder?Fastforward to series 7 and another Len decision saw me out of Strictly only to return in series 9 again. Yeah, votegate did leave it's mark on people (though for most people here it was for Austinwuzrobbed). |
