Sister Bernadette was my Latin teacher ![]() I think it was the uniform. I just went to the CofE Primary school which was a bit more dippy hippy and all about expressing yourself she was jealous of me as well. We did try to switch places but we couldn't fool anyone

You should get back to it, the Latin texts I mean, the thing is if you speak the basics of any of the Romance languages you should find that you may actually know more words than you did when you were young, something to do in the off season when we DOTS get on with the rest of our lives. I loved translating the texts as well, the voice from someone from so long ago having the same joys and fears, and finding the same (smutty ) things funny, is really fascinating.
Which contrary to what some outside there think we do have 😃 Who can ever forget those immoral words ......... amo, amas, amat. |

I have nothing but respect for the nuns in our local convent. A couple of years ago a section of our town was flooded. Much of the area was people on benefits and the nuns took in all the single mums and their families, they lived there completely free of charge for about 6 months. I was working on a project with one of the nuns at the time and the convent was noisy, messy and children running around everywhere, and the nuns seemed to be loving every minute of it.

There are no backing dancers or at least the footage we saw was of Jay, Kellie, Georgia and Helen .. so they must be doing a dance together with some hats. Unless there was another piece of footage?
I hope we don't get a rumba with backing dancers but its probably going to happen. |

Sh*t brown with peachy/beige blouses and ties with the school colours on (red/yellow and blue/green in double stripes - tasteful). The school badge was okay though. |

The school badge was okay though. The winter bowlers were better you could tip your head forward to remove the rain from the gutter around it. Woe betide you were caught outside school not wearing your hat, the Catholic priests from the boys school would also dob you in. However, I work with a nun occasionally now and she is a completely different kettle of fish, to the holy terrors of my youth. |

It is very true what was said earlier . if you can master Latin, then it gives you a good sounding for other languages. I have worked all round Europe and the only languages I have struggled with badly are Polish and Portuguese. SWMBO was most shocked the first time we went to France on holiday ............ she just looked and said 'you have never said you could speak French' lol

Except for today, I've been here every day. But just been reading and learning. A lot of what you have all discussed this week, I have no knowledge of or not really interested ie musicals etc. Rather than make a prat of myself, I just lurked and laughed.
Only today when you were discussing Latin language did I sit up. I went to a grammar run by Catholic priests so naturally Latin was high on the curriculum. I loved the subject and used to read Latin text translating as I went along for fun. The last yearly exams I took I scored 86% and was top of the class lol Only trouble I decided I was bored of school and left @ 16. My mother never forgave me. Latin wasn't a lot of use to me then. The exam was a Seneca passage in which he described his house in Hispania, and just could picture the gladiators house in the movie, very similar. That calmed my nerves and I aced the exam. I got the only A that was awarded in classic Latin in the 5 years I was at uni. Forever grateful to that movie! Quote:

I wanted to do Latin in the Fourth/Fifth Form as my language choice instead of French or German but there were only two of us wanted to do the course they didn't put it on
![]() Now my school's a bloody specialist language one and they do Latin as a matter of course along with about 20 other ones! |

Once you get into Latin is magic. I loved it but always panic in the uni exams (not just Latin) and failed three times in a row. I am forever grateful to the movie Gladiator which I watched the day before my fourth (and last available) time retaking the exam.

I got the only A that was awarded in classic Latin in the 5 years I was at uni. Forever grateful to that movie! Only went to pre school with nuns. Our nun, sor Consuelo (sister consolation) was a Nasty DOT. Seriously. She would leave us alone (class of 15 4/5 year olds) for ten minutes to go to next door. Next door: a bar. Not making this up! Obviously she didn't last long as a nun. BiB - That sounds like my kind of nun! (Joke) My R.E. teacher was a bit of a pervert. You can see why so many people take against religion. |

My niece is taking Latin now. She loves the literature but knows no vocab. She's very like her aunt. I hope the result will be similar (she has just got an A for her mock).

Sorry but Georgia mentioned on ITT tonight she's got backing dancers who will be dressed as other characters from Beauty & the Beast... judging by Joe Varney's reaction I think that was meant to be a surprise though!
I hope we don't get a rumba with backing dancers but its probably going to happen. |

Damn you all to Hades!
Just seen the safety pins. Honestly, how can someone get an award for *that*? He was on last, give him a duff pair of trousers while he's in the Clauditorium, they'd have time to run up a decent pair (or, y'know, just a hem) during the show! Two dirty huge safety pins on the bloody outside of the trousers. Disgusting. |

Unappreciating that I seem to be the only one that can't remember anything much of Latin in spite of 7 years at school...and I was really good at it!
Understand a fair amount of French but vocabulary has gone AWOL, so speaking it is trying for the listener.... ![]()
