Apart from seeing a few of the early 1960s episodes which, as a teenager I thought were rather silly, I've only really watched the series from the time that Matt Smith took on the role and his companion started out as a young redhead sitting on a suitcase in her garden waiting for him to return.

Thus I can confess without shame or embarrassment that, although I'm enjoying the current series well enough (shame they wrote Clara out though) I haven't got the foggiest idea what it's all about!

There's so much reference to stuff that's gone before, that I don't think I'll ever really catch up. Is there a simple one-page potted history of Doctor Who that includes all the names of the weird and wonderful fantasmagorical nemeses the Doctor's been up against since 1963? No? Too much for one sheet of paper I guess!

You have a lot to learn dear old boy!! For a start - Matt Smith is NOT the place to start!!
If you want 'Nu-Who' start with David Tennant. For Classics try Troughton or Tom Baker. It gets confusing after that.......

Or they can start with Eccleston for C21 Who or again as an adult with Hartnell for C20 Who. The eras and Doctors are so different. Surely if we're talking about the C21 series, it'd be abit silly to start with Christmas Invasion or New Earth? Or if we're talking about C20 Who, why would one start with the Fourth Doctor and leave out 11 ish years?

Still, to answer the OP, nah. It's all over the place!

Which raises the question about what is 'real' - and whether it matters.
If the Doctor experienced it, felt the pain, felt the fear and frustration, and psychologically had to deal with the idea of what he'd have to do to win, it doesn't really matter whether the environment was made out of matter or data. It still happened.
