To be honest im suprised Moffatt didnt try to cheapen the storyline more by having a fake clara. He did the same thing with Matt's Doctor. No universe though its just a storyline its not real life.

I keep tuning into this and expect something about the tv movie or power of the daleks. I think talk of jenna coleman should be banned on this thread.

We are, however, expecting her to do so. If she doesn't, I for one will be reconsidering the current state of the universe.

I thought we had already seen Clara's return to Gallifrey in The Name of the Doctor, where she offers the Doctor her damaged TARDIS, presumably on her way to being returned to Trap Street. Apparently she and Ashildr have managed to knacker some of the navigational systems as well as the chameleon circuit (no wonder the TARDIS dislikes her when they meet again later in its timeline). This is an interpretation I've seen in a couple of places (can't remember exactly where), and it seems to me to tie up a number of loose ends admirably.

Yeah, I know about that test. It is really silly to me. I understand the idea behind it, but it seems way too simplistic.

I have seen porn where women have a conversation which meets the test and they are named. How in the world is that better for women than a movie in which the women, who are all shown as strong and intelligent, although they are several in number and are named, simply don't have conversations with each other due to the plot of the movie?

Besides, we saw her die through technology trickery. Why can't she just, eventually, find some other technology trickery in order to cheat death yet again. (Maybe she can send a clone back to that exact second or something?) With all of time and space at her beck and call forever, I am sure that she will find a way.

I would gladly pay $40 a pop for these old serials if they simply animate the rest of them, just so that I can have a complete collection without reconstructions. For many people, the reconstructions are just too difficult to watch.

It's just a rough rule of thumb and of course there are anomalies. It says nothing about the quality of an individual film (whatever that is). "Good" films can fail it and "bad" films can pass it, but it serves to illustrate just how much gender bias there is in film. Since only about half of films pass it I think it makes the point well.

Like I said, it is too simplistic and, in the end, everything becomes subjective. The test is bunk.

By the way, it goes the other way as well. There are so many films geared towards women where the test would fail going the other way. Have you seen the very recent movie "Bad Moms"? It is funny and is a good movie. However, if you apply the test in the other direction, it fails. No two named men ever have any conversation together in the film. This blade cuts both ways.

And trying to base a gender bias on the lack of conversations in movies is bunk. However, I will point you back to the men die like flies while women live as a basis of gender bias in movies. Conversations. who cares? However, I would like to live and not to be treated like expendable cannon fodder just because I am male.

I think I have to disagree with you here. The data add up to no more than a heap of data: what "makes the case" is the interpretation of the data, and this is obviously something open to dispute. If I understand you correctly, you take whether a film includes a conversation between (at least) two [named] female characters about something other than a man to be an indication of whether "gender bias" is present (Post 338), although you have not yet defined what this term denotes. I assume, given the context, that you mean a bias against women (please correct me and clarify this if I'm wrong). What is at issue here is not the data but the interpretation: does whether a film passes or fails this test actually correspond to whether "gender bias" is present in the film?

In this context, instancing specific individual films that show no bias against women but fail the test, or that show bias against women but pass the test, is an entirely rational procedure. I haven't been lucky enough to watch Long Kiss Goodnight, so I can scarcely comment on that. However, a test for gender bias in film that is failed by The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) but passed by The Wild Women of Wongo (1958) would seem to be of little diagnostic value.

[Joan is a lone woman in a world of male clerics and soldiers, so there is no-one for her to have a Bechdel conversation with, but there is no antifeminism here. By contrast, TWWoW has a number of conversations between the Priestess of the Dragon God and Omoo, Omoo and Mona, and so on, which are not about men (they're mainly about being sacrificed to the Dragon God), but the whole film is built around the ethos of those conversations about men that the Bechdel test repudiates.]

I wholeheartedly agree. Like I said before, I am familiar with the test, but I find that it is way too simplistic, based on a lot of sketchy assumptions and, overall, is bunk. This test is the equivalent of "pop psychology", or "pop methodology" if you will.

I don't think Vopiscus's comments invalidate this at all. i agree it is about interpretation. All stats are open to abuse by incorrect analysis leading to incorrect interpretation. This wiki article has, I think, a fair summary of points for and against. It mentions other analyses that have been done which tend to support the test.

To dismiss it as bunkum is to give it insufficient consideration.

I suppose the clincher, and something missing from the test is this: The same test needs to be applied to male characters and see what proportion of films fail that test. If the proportion is about the same, then there's nothing in the test. If however the proportion that pass the male version is significantly greater...

Of course, if they want to drag out the process into 2018, then I could see Series 3 and Series 4 slipping into 2017 as well as the already slipped Series 2. Also, I am hoping that The Power of the Daleks does well so that we can have some more of the earlier missing episodes animated.

Disc 1 of the TV movie is 1050i. Disc 2 is a DVD. It's The same disc as disc 2 of the special edition dvd. Such a waste. It could have been special but instead we got a lesson on how not to release blu Ray.

My blue ray copy of Doctor Who the Movie 1996 arrived today from Amazon.
