He does have a house in London. Goes back to his house in oz for his kids regularly. Sky endlessly repeat a programme about him where he discusses his year in 2015

Yep, was definitely day one - I was staggered when I saw a tweet from the BBC promoting the clips on the website and dived straight on here to comment.

Good to see confirmation that it's for four years (and is thus being brought in-step with the TV rights) - I had wondered whether it was an ad-hoc relationship for just the season. It actually gives the BBC a very strong position - as they have the same kind of deal for ICC rights, so it's a Good Thing for those of us without Sky.

Yeah Shane lives in London more than any city now. Surprising he's doing t20 blast but good on him. Some of the other bigger names should watch domestic cricket every now and then

in the past Ireland were getting really annoyed at sky for not providing coverage for the non England games as that was one reason they struggled to get more games in Ireland.
here a short highlights of Sentanta coverage of the game.

Thank you for the info, Bhaveshgor.

Ah. I probably looked in the wrong place on the first day.

This month's The Cricketer magazine:

'The BBC is showing in-play highlights of England matches on their website. They made no formal announcement, so as to avoid a public argument with Sky, the ECB's TV rights partner.'

Daily Telegraph:

"The biggest television deal in the history of English cricket could be completed as early as next year after the England and Wales Cricket Board indicated to broadcasters that its tender process could begin in the autumn.................."

NB. Tender will be for rights from the year 2020 onwards.

I did wonder how the BBC was able to show these highlights, and so soon after they happened. Presumably Sky's exclusive rights don't extend to digital. Seems like not a bad compromise all around - I doubt many people think, "I was going to sign up for Sky for the live Test cricket, but now I know I can watch a handful of highlights a day on the BBC website I won't bother", and it gives the sport a bit more exposure because a lot of people I know follow the over-by-over written coverage on the BBC when they are at work, and the odd highlight spices that up a little.

Seems like the big loser in this arrangement might be Channel 5. Their evening highlights package is generally very good, well edited given the 45 or so minutes they have to show and the often very tight turnaround time between when play finishes. I'm a little surprised they don't get more viewers, especially as England tend to do quite well at home. Probably the type of programme if it was exactly the same, but without ads, if it was on the BBC there would be at least 50% more viewers.

Hopefully the ECB aren't quite as greedy and delusional as UEFA, and so long as Sky make a generous offer they won't go for BT's inevitable "We have more money than sense" bid.

Here's a potentially daft question about Channel 5's highlights. Do Vaughan, Boycott and Hughes commentate on the whole day's play?

Or do they just commentate on the highlights?

It seems like they shift around between Channel 5 and the BBC radio coverage. So, I think when you hear them commentating during the C5 highlights programme, you are hearing what they said at the time the highlight happened, even though no one was actually listening live.

Sounding increasing like ECB want some on bt some on sky and some on FTA. Losers? Fans who want to watch it all.

I think BT have to go in for it.
There is virtually nothing on in the summer. The only question. Are they in it for the long haul? Can they wait 3 more summers?

Most of the time it does sound like they're *live* - it must be difficult because if your sentence is long, it might cut into the next ball which might not be shown!

Clearly stuff is edited in afterwards so it looks seamless, but I wish at the ad-break they would stop saying stuff like "come back and watch a thrilling session" - it kinda gives away what's coming up.

Give BT our domestic T20 stuff, SKY can keep the tests, ODI's FTA

I think it's setup for BT to get the likes of Vaughan, Tuffers, James Taylor, Freddie, Swann working on there commentary team
SKY's team are perfect for test cricket the likes of Gower, Bumble, Athers, Nas, Holding

I stopped reading at "Give".

You're new to this. That's not how this works.

They probably would get more viewers if they were free to schedule the highlights as they see fit, rather than being confined to a narrow window.

Interesting article in this morning's Daily Mail from Charles Sale regarding Botham and Gower either leaving or being phased out of Sky's cricket coverage. It's unclear how much truth there is to it.

It wouldn't surprise me, Holding too.
Sky's commentary is a bit stale and becoming an old boys club.

Holding said a year or two ago he was thinking of retirement. I hope not. His voice IS summer to me.

Gower and Botham are both fine. I like Ian Ward but he doesn't bring the gravitas that Gower can.

Gower was a good commentator back on the BBC in the 1990's and the early Sky Sports days. But too often he sounds bored nowadays, and while a competent enough presenter, he isn't as good as Mark Nicholas over on Five, or Ian Ward. As for Botham, he lacks an analytical mind, and has very little of substance to say. He has been getting by off the back of his playing career for too long now, it's about time the Sky Sports team was freshened up. Mark Butcher would be a good addition.

Yes, he was. I've only seen one Test on Sky Sports in the last fourteen years, so I can't really comment on how he's changed.

I liked Botham as a player, and in his long stint on A Question of Sport, but I've never rated him as a commentator on his brief BBC stint, his ICC tournament roles, or when I used to see a bit of the Sky Sports coverage when family and friends used to subscribe. He just seems to latch on to one point, and hammer it home again and again and again...

Ian Ward is FANTASTIC at player interviews and county coverage. That's very different to what Gower does. I think it'd be changing it for changings sake. Would almost certainly mean gower and botham do the ashes for bt though!
