- Audience then plummets to just over 400k when Bake Off starts which also coincides with between innings

- Audience then climbs again but Pakistan innings only peaks at 600k due to easy Pakistan win (and audience levels off rather than peaking at end of match)

- Cricket audience is way above Murray US Open QF audience throughout the cricket

700k's not bad; I'm surprised that what happens on the main channels affects sub-based sport, especially if the viewer can re-tune to their tablet or something.
Q - does the figure include pub-watchers, and is it possible a number may have well pauzed the game to watch later (is that possible with Sky??) or recorded.

Pubs not included nor Sky Go. Still not sure if and how BARB are measuring Sky Q. We watched the Murray match on the main TV and had the cricket on two tablets (but unlike Sky Go doesn't use the Internet).

Not sure if graph is just live or live + VOSDAL (viewed on same day as live). If it's the latter, paused/recorded will be included.

With all the ways of watching live TV it must be a nightmare counting them...and that's what advertisers need to know!
BTW would the 700k include viewers in the Republic of Ireland (there is a lot of interest in cricket there nowadays!)?

No, not by BARB, they're UK only. ROI has its own ratings.

Incidentally, Sky now get second by second data from 3m subscribers' boxes, so they'll have a better idea of how many homes are tuned in, but unlike BARB there's no reporting of numbers actually in the room and whether the TV is on.

I'd love to be on the BARB panel, but it's so small only 'normal' people are selected!! Outliers like me who rarely watch the main five channels wouldn't get a look in.

Thanks for that.
BIB the cynic in me thinks that could be (or already is??) the avenue for Sky, or indeed any TV channel, to do target advertising.
Seems simple enough, if you know the viewer is watching gardening programmes a lot, flog them lawnmowers!
If that's not already done via TV, is there anything to stop that - would it break data laws? And, getting back on topic (ever so slightly...) wonder what ads would be thrown at viewers watching a lot of cricket? Raincoats for Lancashire fans, no doubt

You can already do that by advertising during gardening programmes! If someone is watching a cookery programme then they know you like those too. so will want to try to sell you an oven rather than a lawnmower anyway.

Besides, knowing a household watches gardening programmes does not mean the person who watched those is the person watching the cookery programmes. So it would not make sense to make that assumption when you already know everyone watching the cookery programme likes cookery programmes.

That said, Sky do have their AdSmart service. You Sky box will download advertising and then during breaks it will replace the commercial being broadcast with the downloaded one. You do not notice it happening, but it allows targeted advertising based on demographic detail Sky hold about a household, location, and time.

The local garden centre cannot afford, and would not want, to advertise nationally, but it would allows them to advertise to a the post codes within a five mile radius, for example. So you may see an ad for Local Garden Centre whilst other people will be watching one for Faraway Garden Centre, and every one else will get one for Homebase.

It also means that advertising is not restricted in time, so if you record something at Christmas those commercials for mince pies can be replaced by ones for easter eggs if you do not watch it until then.

https://www.skyadsmart.co.uk

Although viewers can opt-out of the service.

And to keep it relevant to the thread, although it works on Sky Sports it does not include live programming, so will only apply during highlights or other programmes, not live matches.

Live sport could be helpful for local advertisers....like this. Next month Peterborough play Bury on Sky, now how much interest is there in that game outside of the two towns? (Not much interest in....I digress.) So a chance for local advertisers in those towns to hit a target audience!
But they would still have to pay national rates!
If we eventually moved away from satellite/ to web based smart broadcasting I suppose you could target a postcode down to a street. Middle of Coronation Street...an ad for my local Offie who says 20% off Didgiespy Beer for the next ten minutes!
Not beyond the bounds??

Note that not all Sky/Sky Sports subscribers get Eurosport. It doesn't come in the basic TV package or as part of the Sport package.

Sky will obviously I guess then have somebody down at Taunton for live updates.

Be interesting if it came down to Next Friday afternoon, and Sky have to show us coverage from Taunton just with one camera

Bumble knows nothing. And it is only a last minute thing in that they waited to see if the game would be meaningful. As they do every year when choosing if and which Championship match to show.

Still, a good chance to say I told you so a few pages back.

Certainly not confident one will be shown now, given all the cuts and that it will be lowly rated. But personally I am not going to read anything into him saying there will be no country championship match until it does not happen.

The late season match is never scheduled until the week before as they wait to see which will be the most meaningful to show based on the title race. And we already knew they are not required to show two matches because of the years in which they only aired one.

But as Lloyd does not work on those games there is no reason why he would know what Sky's plans were. And he has been clear before that he just does his job and does not know about such things.”

Couldn't think of a worst ground to hold a County Championship decider, the Morque from London.

Im guessing they wont be able to celebrate or make any noise, as it may wake up the yellow and red clothed people
