BT Sport has confirmed the signings of England cricket legends Michael Vaughan, Graeme Swann, Kevin Pietersen and Australian great Ricky Ponting to offer expert analysis as it kicks off its international cricket coverage.

Greg James, BBC Radio 1 presenter and co-host of Not Just Cricket on BBC Radio 5 Live, will front the coverage on BT Sport with award winning Test Match Special reporter Allison Mitchell based in Australia.

The new home of all Australia’s Test matches, One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals played in Australia, including the much-anticipated Ashes Test Serie against England in 2017/18.

Your cricket fix doesn’t stop there and you can watch some of the world’s best players such as Brendon McCullum, Mitchell Johnson, Kieron Pollard and Kumar Sangakkara in the T20 Big Bash League, while the Women’s Big Bash League and the Women’s Ashes series will also be shown exclusively on BT Sport.

Coverage kicks off on Thursday 3 November with Australia facing a stellar South Africa side in the first of three Test matches. The Aussies then host Pakistan in another three-match Test series which includes the famous Boxing Day test at the MCG.

The Big Bash League begins on Tuesday 20 December and you can watch highlights of every match on BT’S freeview channel, BT Sport Showcase.

Simon Green, head of BT Sport, said: “We’re excited to be adding international cricket including next winter’s much anticipated exciting Ashes series, and the hugely successful Australian Big Bash, to the line-up of exclusively live sport available to BT Sport viewers.

"I hope viewers will enjoy our cricket coverage and we’re thrilled that Greg James is joining BT Sport along with some of the greatest players of recent times.”

Sign up to BT Sport to watch Australia's series with South Africa and Pakistan, the Big Bash League, the 2017/18 Ashes Series.

That reads like it'll be the Channel 9 commentary feed, then, with Greg James hosting from the studio and Alison Mitchell reporting from Aus. Ponting over in Aus with Mitchell and then Swann, Vaughan et al in the studio with James? I wonder what this means for Vaughan and Swann's TMS commitments - presumably Vaughan in particular will still be doing the England tour with TMS - and his BT commitments will fit around that?

I still don't understand how Greg James will be able to stay up all night anchoring cricket and then do a daily Radio 1 show? I wondered if he'd just do the Big Bash, but it reads like he's doing the internationals too?

He will have worked out his holidays with the BBC. He can have a month off, not like breakfast where it's as noticeably.

He loves his cricket but is a bit of novice at sports presenting on TV. I think he will move to 5Live after Radio 1 (probably 8-10 years away)

Be good if BT sub-licensed highlights to ITV4 or even the BBC

The press release gives a bit more detail...
The coverage kicks off on 3 November, with Australia and South Africa going head to head in the first test, and will be presented by Greg James, with expert analysis from Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan, former England off spinner Graeme Swann and Australia’s all-time leading run-scorer and ex-skipper Ricky Ponting. Kevin Pietersen will be providing expert comment and analysis alongside reporter Alison Mitchell in Australia.

BT can get similar figures for its football as sky now. Sure the cricket audience isn't there but big bash is popular so some people might jump on for that and the ashes next year will drive even more to them.

A toe in the water for more rights?

Think you are letting your love of cricket cloud your judgement here

Example

BT Sport last week - Premier League game 558,000. Sky Sports - 1,058,000. Almost twice as many. Plus the 3rd most watched show on BT1 had just 88,000 viewers ( live Aviva Rugby Union ). If the football or Aviva Rugby cannot command huge viewing figures I don't think overnight cricket will.

BT can, and does, get million + watching games so it clearly does have the subscribers.

I'm not saying it'll be same amounts but plenty of people who want to watch the ashes will sub as its pretty cheap compared to sky sports package.

It certainly won't be 'hundreds' watching

For Channel 9 Clarke, and maybe Younis and Pietersen, are in, Lee and Hussey are out.

One game on Dec 28th had figures over 1 million, just once.

BARB shows BT Sport 1 had 8 shows over 500,000 viewers since April. Of that 8 not one over 1 million, in fact only 1 over 750,000

I want to watch the Ashes but I am not going to subscribe to BT Sport to do so, not whilst I am paying for Sky already. I would wager ( a very hefty sum too ) that I am in the same camp as the majority not the minority there.

It wont be hundreds I agree, but it will be nearer hundreds than millions.

.
Sky sports subscribers already in the minority. If you fancied watching the next ashes its alot cheaper and easier to sub for just that time coming up then to get a full fat sky sub. Will figures be down? Not doubting that. BT Doesn't have the history or content sky does but its growing and getting things sky would rather have like The Ashes, Big Bash and UEFA competitions

TBH technically more people subscribe to BT sports than Sky sports.
Although the numbers that actually watch BT Sports is unclear.
but I believe the point Cricketblade was trying to make is that similar big premier league games in BT get the same type of ratings you would expect if the games are on Sky sports.

personally think in rating terms Sky or BT are similar but Sky got the edge in that their show majority of the Cricket, Football and major sports so they often get higher ratings most of the time whereas BT don't show many major things every day or every week so struggle with the ratings.
but when BT show major games they get very good ratings, but that is not very often.

Some of the massive top 6 vs top 6 especially in midweeks or bank holidays have rated massively for BT sports.
Man u vs Arsenal
Man city vs Arsenal were big ratings
https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...-sport-youtube

liverpool vs Sevilla got a massive ratings last year.

Edit I mean how many of the people that have BT Sport actually watch BT Sport.
Since Sky sports have less subscribers than BT Sports but more people watch Sky Sports in a week compared to BT Sports.

The Champions League and Europa League finals did get over 1 million yes. The highest was 1.6m for Europa

Last week the top 10 rated shows on BT Sport. Only 2 got into 6 figures. Number 10 had 30,000 viewers.

As for your point about "massive" figures, well they aren't. As I have pointed out only 1 BT Premier game last season broke a million. That game was Dec 28th and the Sky game got 400,000 more. So the fact is more people watch Sky Sports than BT. And if you based it on sport other than football it is a huge difference.

How much is BT, do they do "shorter" deals as I'd like to see the Ashes.

Sky's coverage is good but I like Greg James, he knows his cricket, heard him on 5 Live a few times.

Talking of the football. The switch to 5.30 has been good for BT those ratings are up on the 12.45 slot.
However I don't think the champions league has been quite the subscriber driver they thought.

It's an open secret that the ECB are sounding out BT and Sky may face a battle to keep exclusive cricket rights.

This of course gives sky subscribers a dilemma.
I know many a cricket fan who are fed up paying sky subscriptions to support endless football matches that they don't watch.

The days of one sub for all the cricket are over. The winners? ECB. Losers are people who want to watch it all.

It sounds like Swann will be working from the studio in London while Pietersen will be based in Australia, so I'm sure it will be fine.

In fairness, they never get big crowds for test matches in Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Is it on TV in the UK?

Interestingly I'm not sure the authorities will see that as a failure.

1. The UAE tests never get any sort of crowd beyond a few travelling members of the Barmy Army when they play England.

2. The crowd increased considerably for the night session which is surely part of the point of it?

3. You'd expect the TV audiences also increased for the night session.

I also remember that when day night tests were touted a few years ago it was only supposed to be at grounds right in the city centres to grab those leaving work. That ground in Dubai is a bus ride out of the City I think isn't it?
