I don't suppose they are paying very much (if anything) for the rights. If they were approached by the organisers who said to them, "we'd really like this tournament to be shown in the UK - have the rights for free, and show it however you want" then why wouldn't they take them up on their offer. It must cost Sky a minuscule amount to take the feed and put it 'to air' on their online streams - they are not even putting it on a broadcast channel. And if it's additional perceived benefit to their subscribers (i.e. it cements Sky even more as the 'home of cricket') then it's a net gain for them.

With the passing of both Richie Benaud and Tony Greig; and the semi-retirement of Bill Lawry (only seems to do the Melbourne test, as a Victorian); Channel 9's coverage has declined markedly.

And I won't miss recent one-sided series against the likes of West Indies.

At least in the mid-nineties when they wallopped everyone at home, you had that great team with Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist etc. It was a pleasure watching them and listening to Richie etc.

One of the benefits of Sky's cricket coverage is, in winter, being able to catch a couple of hours of the tests in New Zealand and Australia.

Australia's gone, will Sky still have the rights to New Zealand's home games...and when are England next due over there?

Sky has rights to New Zealand home cricket until 2020–21. They signed a seven-year deal in 2014 stating it includes series against England in 2018 and 2020.

That's great news. Currently imo NZ are more entertaining than Aus (although that could well change by then ) but more importantly, games start around 9 - 10pm our time so there's a full session and more before bedtime > that's retirement for you!

Yep - they married the two sets of rights (online clip rights and the traditional highlights rights) together very successfully back in the 06/07 Ashes tour, and did some good online stuff based around their highlights rights at the 09 World T20 and 2011 World Cup.

I just wonder, though, if that's as far as the BBC is going with these rights - otherwise why not get the highlights rights at the same time? Having said that, it's probably a good game to play, as they won't want full highlights from all the ICC tournaments and the World Cup is on the B-list, so the BBC can come in with an offer for just that tournament when it comes around in 2019 and, providing it is of sufficient magnitude, they will be guaranteed the highlights rights.

Highlight are not really possible for the Rest of the ICC portfolio, Sky pay a premium for the exclusive rights and highlights.
World cup is an exception because it is listed.
Plus I doubt BBC want Highlights for the Under 19s and the women game.

Wonder how much the highlights for Champions trophy/T20 world cup cost since BBC did pay for the T20 rights in 2009 when it didn't really have to.

Although in 2009 BBC did have more money and BBC were trying to push the World cup/T20 World cup and Home Ashes to be listed so it is possible they paid quite a bit off money for it.

TV highlights weren't on the table in that process, at this stage the tender process was just for online clip rights

The BBC got highlights of the 2008 Champions Trophy bundled into the highlights of the 2007 World Cup that they had. After the Champions Trophy was cancelled they negotiated for that to be transferred to the 2009 World T20.

I was under the impression that the Beeb purchased the 2009 World T20 because it was being hosted in England and the 2011 World Cup was thrown in with that. But I can well believe your version of events, as I've never seen any of this officially documented.

BBC can only show about 4 mins highlights but they can in theory show every 4, 6 and wicket.
They have the same rights as cricinfo which have 4 mins highlights.

Edit surprised Sky did not get these as well since their clearly not exclusive rights and they can post them online like they do with other cricket matches.

FTA highlights won't be known till 3-4 months before the world cup.
The tender for the Live/Highlights have already been given and Sky have won them but just like , 11, 15 world cups Sky would just give them away close to the event because it is a listed event.

in the last one Sky got permission to broadcast the event but in doing so had to give ITV the highlights package.

Although if LOSG is correct BBC did buy the ICC rights from ICC directly for the 2007 and 2008 Events.
but in recent times that hasn't been the case.

You're right - it was announced in September 2005 that the BBC had picked up highlights for the 2007 World Cup (hot on the heels of the Ashes win and a bit of an outcry that test cricket was going to Sky) as an attempt to show that they were interested in the sport. This was a contract directly with the ICC (or at least the Global Cricket Corporation, who managed the rights in that period).

In 2003, of course, the BBC and Channel 4 did want to show highlights, but couldn't come to terms with Sky to have the highlights sub-licenced, the case went to the ITC (as the highlights are B-listed) and the ITC ruled in favour of Sky (agreeing that neither the BBC nor C4 were offering a reasonable amount for the rights).

I always thought that the 2011 World Cup highlights were purchased from the ICC, as part of the deal with the ICC for the World T20 in 2009, but that's been thrown into doubt today. In any case, the BBC did throw the kitchen sink at the coverage, flying three presenters out to the subcontinent and doing very good shows (produced by Sunset and Vine). Nothing like the ITV effort last time around, which was just a voice-over job, with the highlights edits themselves cobbled together by ITV in London from the world feed. If anything, the 2015 FTA coverage was the 'bare minimum B-list' job. (Not that I'm complaining - it was better, by a long, long way, than no FTA coverage at all)

Sounds like a better deal than what cricinfo got, unless Cricinfo are not that bothered in showing the full 6 mins per hour for the Under 19 world cup.

Suppose we should know more during the T20 world cup.
Although a T20 game would only be allowed 15 minutes of coverage.
Whereas a 50 game should allow BBC to show a 42 minutes highlights show which funny enough is the length of previous World cup highlight shows.

What's in it for them though? They've already got the major TV rights, so barring a few more website hits, and that is countered by the fact they are already available for free on the ICC and Cricinfo websites.


I bet they won't though. Those 5 minute ICC highlights packages are too convenient to go the hassle of putting together something longer themselves. And anyway, I suspect the '6 minutes per hour of play' refers to the short clips available as the match goes on, rather than a highlights package at the end of the day.
