Here goes with what many will think is a silly question.
I'm thinking of buying the Cambridge Audio TV5 soundbase which would be connected to the TV by way of an optical digital cable. Now, as well as this connection do I have to make any other connection between our Blu-ray player and the TV5 or do we just leave the player as it is connected to the TV via HDMI.
I notice on I think some Sony soundbases there are 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. In this case am I right in saying that the HDMI leads from the Blu-ray player and Humax PVR etc. go into the soundbase HDMI sockets and then just one output HDMI lead goes from the soundbase to the TV?
Is one system any better than the other?
Many thanks for any assistance.

The extra HDMI sockets are for when you don't have many on your TV, it's not really any 'better' or 'worse'.

Assuming you have plenty of HDMI sockets on your TV, and both TV and sound system are ARC/CEC compatible it 'may' be preferable to connect via HDMI - as this allows you to use the TV remote to control the volume.

The TV should pass through the audio from anything connected via HDMI to it to the optical out and hence on to the sound base.

Connecting everything via an AV system is only really useful if you have a full surround sound system. With a stereo soundbar/base it is less important where the peripheral devices are connected.

The reason for this is that the TV may not pass anything other than stereo sound from HDMI to optical. Not a problem for a stereo system but obviously not ideal for a surround system. Or if it can pass surround it may not be able to cope with some of the modern formats due to the bandwidth limits of the optical connection.
