Hi,

I wondered if anyone could offer me a spot of advice on buying a new mobile phone handset?

I am looking for a mobile phone whose screen can be dimmed very very low so that it is as dark as a kindle like this: http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/news/...rs_spt2011.jpg

I get on just fine with the old style CCFL backlit screens but find that LED backlit screens cause me a lot of eye problems. I'm not sure if it is the brightness or the flicker that is the problem, but I am aware of all the physics and the research that's going on.

It seems to me that by now someone must be getting close to making these LED screens properly dimmable, but I find it hard to test the actual handsets because the screens are too bright for me even to test briefly.

I wondered if anyone might know if a new style handset has been made yet that solves this problem?

Thanks!

Any android phone can get the app "Screen Filter" which dims your display as much as you want it to. Right down to nearly absolutely nothing. Works brilliantly for me when in a theatre or something and want to check the time without being blindingly obvious.

Take a look: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...haxor&hl=en_GB

Thanks for that. I'll try it on my husband's phone and see if it works for me.

Nope, that didn't work. There isn't a ccfl backlit phone lurking out there is there? I keep wondering if someone remembers which HTC phone was the last CCFL one sold and maybe I could find an unused one in some corner of the internet somewhere.

iPhones can be set to go super-dim with a triple-click of the home button:

Works well for me when I need to use the phone in the pitch black. Might be worth a try if you have access to one...

Cobrets (Configurable brightness preset by Iber Parodi Siri) works fine for me on my Android tablet. The recent versions have added advertising so I haven't checked those out, though the ads are probably only in the app itself and not the widget. Anyway it lets you set several brightness levels from a widget, including one which applies a dark filter across the screen ("Nightly").

Adjust the Nightly Filter- Filter Opacity until it as dark as you prefer at night. On my Hudl2, it was able to reduce the brightness from what was far too bright in an unlit room with the original minimum setting, to something lower than was desirable after waking up in the middle of the night in a dark bedroom. Play around with the level and you'll find something which works for you.

There is also a Diurnal Filter which has both that Opacity (brightness) level which can be set to a different value if you wish, as well as colour adjustment if you want an additional night option which turns the whole display more yellow/orange/brown at night, to help reduce blue light sleep-related effect.

The widget provides a near instant way to change the brightness level to something far lower than the normal level, which was a godsend on my Hudl2 at night as the minimum brightness on that was way too high.

Most samsungs use amoled screens. You could try one of those

The S6 can be dimmed to extreme levels. Samsung have the best screens at least.

Thanks, I've heard that the Samsung S series phones have very good screens. I must have a look at those.
