I like this new version. What are / were your thoughts on the original? Isn't it the last number one that wasn't X Factor?

The original criminally never made no1.

The Gary Jules/Michael Andrews cover did. This new version is just another slow rehash.

Christ on a bike...... isn't bad enough that adverts are fcuking with the music from my formative years without some other no talent dirging it up as well.

I never liked the original. Gary Jules did a great cover of it but personally my favourite is by The Red Paintings

Studio version:

I prefer the live version myself but I can't find a good video other than their singer Trash McSweeney performing it with The Dresden Dolls:

For me, the Gary Jules version is the definitive version. It easily surpasses the original.

I like PostmodernJukebox though as they do some interesting spins on well known tunes.

As already said the original wasn't by Gary Jules. The original was by Tears for Fears and it made no.3 in 1982. Gary Jules wasn't the last time we had a non X Factor Christmas no.1. There was Band Aid 20 in 2004, Rage Against the Machine in 2009, Military Wives in 2011 and Justice Collective in 2012. 2003 was great though because in the end it the fight was between Gary Jules and The Darkness. The Pop Idol dirge of a cover of Happy Xmas (war is over) only made no.5. It seemed at the time that reality music shows were on their out but sadly it ended up not being true.

Loved the original. It was the uptempo beat, juxtaposed with the serious lyrics that made it particularly poignant and haunting.

Hard to see how a copy (a bad one at that) can "define" something. You may prefer the dirge of the covers but the definitive version is the original.

The original in 1982 from Tears For Fears was the best. The Gary Jules one was okay. This latest one is utter shite.

The Gary Jules version works best when heard in the film itself, though it's great on its own obviously. It brings out the emotion of the lyrics, unlike most of the more recent 'let's make it slow with piano' covers which are fake and don't do much for the song. The Gary Jules Mad World is one of the only times that technique actually worked!

The Tears For Fears original is the only version I love. I still listen to The Hurting album a lot (that Mad World is from), it sounds as good as ever.

whilst i agree, the film donny darko did add something to the gary jules version, but for me unlike the original didnt have the longevity. it was used well in the film, and gave it a new lease of life - but its lost its interest now, unlike the original which still sounds good

That's why I said "for me" it's the definitive version. I fully appreciate that everyone will have a different opinion, especially as far as music goes.

Agree with the general sentiment that the tears for fears version was the best. The Hurting was a brilliant debut album. Pale Shelter another brilliant tune.

Gary Jules version OK a popular cover but not the kind of sound I can listen to. Too slow and depressing. Not the sound intended by the original I think.

This latest cover I haven't even listened to as I know i'll hate it

This new version tries to do something different, but the Gary Jules version is the best imo as it really brings out the haunting emotion and loneliness of the lyrics. Doing the song in a 1930's cabaret style sounds a bit weird imo. Then again it's a mad world, so maybe they're focusing on the "unconventional" aspect.

I'm scared! Clowns are terrifying. This one is looking sad but like he will come through the screen to strangle me any second...

The midget has a good voice though.

I think Tears For Fears peaked with their first album so my vote goes to the original.
