OK so I am really worried about my almost 11 year old border collie.

About 20 minutes ago she got up from where she was sleeping on the carpet and there was a really large red patch on the carpet, I looked at her and she has red mucus coming from her. It smells quite bad.

I cleaned her up, she is still getting a lot of mucus from her. It's red in colour but I wouldn't say it was blood, it's more like red discharge.

She finished her season about 2 months ago. She is absolutely fine in herself and I haven't noticed any changes in her, she is eating, drinking and happy.

I am obviously terrified, it's 11pm at night and there is no access to a vet this time of the night, I am so scared that this could be something serious, what's wrong with her?

Right now she is sleeping, but I am really worried. Any advice at all would be really good, anybody else experienced this with their dog?

If your bitch is not spayed (and you said she was recently in season) it could potentially be quite serious. I'd get her to a vet as soon as possible tomorrow. I'm sorry I can't be more help but I don't think you need worry overnight. Please let us know how she gets on.

Could be pyometra, since she isn't spayed. In the early stages, it can present like this and the bad smell would certainly suggest pyometra. You need to get her to a vet as soon as they open. Some sites online suggest that you will see puss from her vagina, but this isn't always the case (and certainly not early on). Whenever i've seen pyo in any of my rats, it has always started with blood before pus. Pyometra is also most commonly found just after the dog has been in heat, according to TheKennelClub...

If it is pyo, then she will need to be spayed - that is the only "cure".

Sounds like pyometra, what with her not long out of season, a bad smell and the reddish discharge. Pyo is a condition where the uterus fills with pus, if it is Pyo she has, this will be the discharge that you can see leaking out, which is a reddish brown colour. Pyo is serious, it can be life threatening so get to the vet as soon as possible tomorrow. Depending how bad it is, an open Pyo can be cured with the mismate injection, but usually a spay is the way to go so there's no chance of a recurrence. Hope she's ok.
