It's a licence commitment not anything PSB per se. True PSB requirements for commercial radio ceased in 1991 along with the IBA

Out of interest, do any of the commercial stations in Wales broadcast anything in Welsh now?
Swansea Sound used to, and I think Champion 103 did as well.
Has that all stopped or does it continue in some form?

I think Capital North Wales broadcasts a lot of Welsh programming?

I'm not sure if that station's FM signal covers Wrexham, though, and it obviously doesn't cover Swansea.

Radio Ceredgion has a weeknight Welsh show - Clwb Nos - and I think some of the links are bi-lingual.

Capital Cymru (was Champion 103) - their local shows (6-10 and an extended 1-7) are largely in Welsh and feature Welsh language music.

Capital North Wales Coast (was Coast 96.3) used to opt out of the network for a 1hr Welsh programme at 5am but a quick scan of the schedule shows it to have gone. As far as I know this never appeared on 103.4.

AFN Moenchengladbach 1143 1kw closed on January 27. The only German MW station now is AFN Vilseck 1107 10kw which is due to close some time this year.

I confess that I did a double take while reading the posts - wondering if Moenchengladbach was in Wales - 'Bach'!!

To be replaced by a migrant camp

Bet the locals, despite not liking the masts, would rather have them back than that.

Lets hope the residents of Marnach will be happier with their new neighbours, or has the spirit of this famous transmitter had the last laugh.

That'll give them something to complain about that's for sure!

The Radio Bristol 1548 service always had a very limited service area as 1548 is
used by other stations, particularly Capital Gold in London.
The FM signal on 95.9 has a remarkably wide coverage and can be heard clearly
in Bournemouth, Poole and even parts of the Isle of Wight!

You mean 95.5 from Mendip that was R Bristol, but is now allocated to Somerset Sound, (though most of the time it's still R Bristol's output of course !!)

Normally the R Bristol signal from Mangotsfield on 1548 is so strong it swamps out all co channel and electrical interference including lightning static from thunderstorms even when they are overhead. Over the last few weeks I have been hearing Gold from Saffron Green London in the background during the evenings and on a recent trip to near Swindon where I can normally get a clear signal from R Bristol it was being swamped out by Gold from London.
I know R Bristol has not reduced power as I am seeing 78-80dbu on my receiver so I suspect there is a fault at Saffron Green, I think it's lost it's directional properties.

Or the directional array as changed direction (either slightly or significantly)?

Gold (1548) does not appear to be any stronger or weaker than before in the western half of the Anglia Region with Forth 2 directly fighting it (generally unsuccessfully) in many parts of the region still.

Sorry for clarity: I mean Forth 2 is only partially audible after dark in Beds/ Northants/ Hunts etc

Saffron Green is a complex site with 4 masts http://tx.mb21.co.uk/gallery/saffrongreen/
so if directionally is affected by a fault LBC News might also be stronger?
Must be an expensive site to run so I expect Global might be thinking of closing it sometime? But the Rajar figures for the number of AM listeners left using it are not published

Out of the 337,000 listening to Gold London, what do you think is the split between AM, DAB and online?

ISTR Arqiva do have a sloping wire radiator at SG that is the standby 'array' for 1548 and 1152. When that's running the HRP is a nice fat cardioid, albeit at lower forward power.

It's used when maintenance is required for the main system

1260 is also closing at same time at Radio Bristol's AM outlet - I remember listening to Classic Gold on 1260... those were the days!

I wonder if that will be used for a community station somewhere in the West of England at some point?

Slowly medium wave stations are going - all down to development of their sites

I live in North Bristol. Does anyone know what I 'might' be able to pick up when 1260 and 1548 disappear?

I usually pick up stuff from the Midlands, so chances are I'll pick up something from there. I looked at this but unfortunately it's old data:

http://www.mediumwaveradio.com/uk.php

I'm guessing I'll probably get either Absolute, Smooth or both, and probably if I bothered to do some more research I'd know for sure.

It will be interesting to see what those frequencies are like after hours...
