So having just replaced my aging Yamaha RV for a new Marantz RV, I've noticed that the Marantz doesn't have HDCP 2.2, neither do most RV's made before 2015 and even into 2015 a lot still don't have it.

So with my current set up it's not a problem. But in the future, when I need a new TV, I will probably get a new Fire TV Box with 4K etc. So the Fire TV won't display 4k through the RV, so it will have to connect direct to the TV and then use optical back to the RV. Trouble is optical doesn't do DD+ (as far as I'm aware), so it looks like we're 1 step forwards and 3 steps back.

Now you can get some HDMI splitters that strip out the HDCP, but it seems that the manufacturers are making it expensive and difficult for users to integrate their existing equipment into new equipment, while the pirates are just laughing at the new copy protection.

So has anyone got this problem and what work arounds are you employing?

Does the Yamaha support ARC over the HDMI link to the TV?

If so then I would think that could solve the problem. If the TV is capable of passing whatever audio format it receives on it's HDMI inputs to the ARC channel then it should cope with most formats.

That is if you can persuade the source devices to send those formats up the HDMI to the TV in the first place. Depends if you can override whatever the HDMI handshaking might set for itself.

Yes the Marantz supports it so will have to make sure the TV does, when and if I buy one.

Misread the OP, got the new and old receivers the wrong way round.

You'd be hard pushed to find a modern TV that does not do ARC. From the random samples I've looked at it is a pretty common feature now. So shouldn't be a deal breaker when the time comes.

I think my existing LG plasma does, just haven't had the use for it. At the moment it's used just as a TV monitor ie I don't use the TV to receive any broadcasts.

Thanks for your help Chris

Probably not for HDCP 2.2 (there's a few that can have custom firmware but it might well be cheaper to buy new equipment).

HDFury have 4k splitters available. The Integral is 4k 60p, 24bits 4:4:4 600Mhz and 18Gbps, most importantly this is the only one that has HDCP 2.2 decryption, not cheap at £160. Prices will naturally come down. Others are HDMI 1.4.

As far as I know Amazon Fire HD is only HDMI 1.4, 4k @30fps, so the OP may be able to connect directly to the amp without the need to buy additional equipment or use ARC.

^^ Nope it's been mentioned on a Fire TV review, that the new Fire TV needs HDCP 2.2 to run 4k.

Another quick question save starting a new topic. So at the weekend I played a blu ray from my PS4 and was only getting Multi Channel, not DD+ or DTS etc, is that down to my HDMY cable I'm using from the PST to the RV?

The cable can only either carry the digital data unmolested or it cannot. Other than that it has zero influence at all on what data is carried. That is entirely determined by the devices hanging off either end.

So if the PS4 is sending multi channel audio then that is what it has been told to send.

^^ Thats what I thought, the PS4 has a audio setting in the menu, but thats for gaming and when I just have the home screen up it's showing DD+ etc, but soon as I play a Blu Ray it changes to multi channel. Will have to have a deeper look into this.

Yet on another review it states only HDMI 1.4 is supported.

The reason for both of these major holes in the design of the Fire TV is a simple one: a more detailed look at the boxes specs reveals that Amazon decided to give their new device HDMI ports with the old 1.4 standard instead of the new 2.0 version*or the 2.0a standard necessary for 4K UHD + HDR encoding.

RE multichannel output....

Check your audio output settings for Bluray on the PS4 - set to bitstream if you want the amp to decode and have the amp display the actual audio format, set to LPCM if you want the PS4 to decode and have Multichannel displayed by the amp.

And on here

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/cus...deId=201859000

and

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/cus...deId=201460980

they seem to imply, though don't explicitly say it, that the Fire TV box is HDCP 2.2 compliant.

So who knows?
