I posted on here last night to say that my Dog was suddenly and heavily losing red mucus from her vagina.

Over night she was getting worse. This morning we called the vet out to see her and confirmed that it was pyometra, he said that she was really very unwell. He mentioned an operation, but said it would be no guarantee, He said that it would be the right decision to let her go.

I am utterly devastated, I'm in shock, I keep on crying so much I can't breath.

This has happened so suddenly and I can't believe she has gone, I already miss her so much and I honestly don't know how I am going to get through this. This is unbearable.

She was my best friend, she was my whole life to be honest.

It's just happened so suddenly, I can't get my head around it. I can't believe she's gone.

It's bound to be a terrible shock, there will be a huge void in your life. I have no words to take your pain away, but it's clear you adored your dog and that she had a wonderful life with you. I am very sorry to hear of demise of your dog.can i just say that my dog who is 13 was diagnoised with this nasty disease, fortunatley she had emergancy surgery and she pulled through, the vet said lucky it was open womb, so the discharge cameout of her overies.
Sounds like your poor dog has closed womb, all the poison stayed inside her..

I am now beginning to feel an immense sense of guilt.

She had an open pyometra, which means there is a potential she could have been saved. What if she could have come through this?

She loved life so much, and I miss her, I just cannot believe this.

I can't help but feel I should have tried more, it's killing me that there is even a small chance my beautiful dog has gone sooner than necessary.

I'm reading that if I had had her spayed, this would never have happened. I had absolutely no idea that this could happen, I'd never even heard of it until yesterday night.

I cannot describe this guilt.

Guilt is an absolutely natural element of the grieving process. I know it's easy for me to say, but try not to beat yourself up. You had no way of knowing in advance that this would happen - millions of unspayed dogs never get it.

As far as the decision to let her go is concerned - you will have instinctively 'known' it was the right thing to do. She may have had an intolerable 36 hours undergoing invasive surgery, feeling rotten, disorientated from the anaesthetic, and then died anyway. You did the kindest thing in making sure she didn't suffer - it's the biggest (and hardest) responsibility we dog owners have, and the least we can do for them after sharing our lives with them.

You'll never 'get over this' - punch anyone who suggests otherwise, but it will get better, and you will come to accept it and smile at memories of her. Be kind to yourself in the meantime. I don't know if you're male or female, but I don't care - *hugs* regardless...

Please don't feel guilty. You obviously loved her very much. We can beat ourselves up about things all day, and it won't change anything. You gave her a loving home, and a good life.

You will also never forget her. Tears are part of the healing process. I cried when both mine went, perfectly natural.

Thank you so much, my mind just tortures me with guilt. I truly loved her, and she knew that. I hand fed her chicken or ham everyday because she didn't like to eat from a bowl. She slept in my bed, me and my Mum adored her. It just doesn't make it any easier. The house is just so empty now, I don't know what to do with myself it's awful.

She was only 11 and I thought she would be with me longer.

Please don't feel guilty. I know how you feel, when I lost my girl prematurely it hurt physically, really dreadful pain . I am so sorry for your loss. Please try and remember all the love you shared with her.

Your dog was lucky to have you as an owner. Everyone and everything passes on. When I was in Crete I saw many things. Sad things. But life continues. It's the quality of life that counts for pets.

Oh DR I'm so very sorry for your loss. I had been wondering how you'd got on at the vets earlier on. Please do not blame yourself or feel guilty. Pyo can be a silent killer, many times you don't even realise a dog has it until it's too late, as some appear completely normal, still eating, drinking, being themselves and give no clue there's a problem at all. In a closed Pyo the pus can't drain out of the womb so the dog would quickly be in obvious discomfort with a sore, hard, possibly swollen abdomen, and you would soon be aware of it.

In an open one however, if she was still active and herself, until the discharge starts leaking out, you can be completely unaware there's a problem, and by the time it's noticeable, the pus gathered in the uterus could have already caused toxic shock or septicaemia in the blood stream, and this is what kills unless your lucky enough to catch it in time. Unfortunately it seems like your girl was one of the unlucky ones who didn't have any signs for you to spot until it was far too late, and that isn't your fault in any way. You can't see inside your dog, until something becomes apparent you can't know there's a problem there.

Please don't feel guilty, losing a pet is bad enough without feeling like your to blame when your not. You did the best you could for your dog and she had the best life she could with you as a happy, content, much loved cherished companion. She was lucky to have you and in time you will be able to look back and think not of what you've been left without but of the treasured memories you've been left with. (((Huge hugs to you))) xx

Right now I am tearing myself up about the things in her life that I should have done differently, I let her down in some ways. I could have done better for her and I took her for granted, because I'm an idiot and didn't realise how beautiful she truly was until now.

I am sitting here putting off going to bed because she should be coming up with me, being tucked into bed. I can't stand the change in just going up without my girl there, it's going to be horrible x

I'm sure she knew you loved her. Reading your post it's obvious you did and still do.

Guilt is a useless emotion. What use is it now? We are driven by love to act and live. Guilt stops either.


What you are going through is unpleasant enough without that. You need your strength.

Do things a little differently each night when going to bed etc. It breaks up the routine associated with memory.

I am sorry for your loss , they certainly leave their paw prints on our hearts, take comfort in the fact you did the right thing and she knew you loved her . Nothing any of us can say will make you feel better right now but when we lose our pets it is the same as when you lose a human, it takes time, you never forget you wouldn't want to but the pain goes and you remember the good times with a smile.

As for feeling guilty, please don't you are hurting enough without blaming yourself, speyed dogs can get it as well so there are no guarantees.

The guilt I have, not just about her death, but the mistakes I made in her life, is ripping me to pieces. Things I can't change now because she's gone.

Has anyone else experienced guilt about things in their Dogs life after they have gone? I feel I wasn't good enough for her.

I didn't get up today until 5pm, getting up knowing she's not here is too hard, I've not washed, or eaten, I just want to sleep. Everything has changed so quickly, it's awful, I feel so so guilty and I don't know how to cope at the moment.

Sorry for going on everyone, I just feel hideous in ways I didn't know where possible right now. I feel it will never actually get better.

I tried to watch some things on youtube earlier, I felt guilty for trying to make myself feel better. I can't believe she's gone.

You know what? I sometimes feel guilt because I had my dog spayed. Because it isn't always the best thing despite what people say.
There can be consequences of what we do and don't do but we can't know what would have happened if we had decided differently and every case is different so try not to torment yourself. We make the best judgement call at the time.
What you are going through is awful but it will get easier.

If you didn't know you didn't know there's nothing that will change that...pyo is the biggest killer in unspeyed bitches, in general it is always best to spey female dogs, neutering males is a more difficult choice.

As for the other yes he guilt is common I had my dog PTS as he kept on having really bad grand mal seizures and nothing changed them and it was heart breaking to watch over the period of a year. I don't regret the decision as he got no joy from walks anymore and was displaying fear symptoms whenever he left the house etc. But I felt and still do sometimes that I took him for granted when he was hear and didn't love him enough and do enough with him, its no different than losing any other loved one you wish you had had more time.

You don't get over it but you grieve less every day and life goes on, Big hugs xxx
