What is this Kid Mode app that's suddenly appeared on my HTC One M8 that I can't uninstall? It's already hijacked my home screen a couple of times.

Thanks. I should have tried that. It really annoys me that they load useless bloatware that you can't delete if you don't need it.
I've got one on my Samsung S5, but it was an option to download.
I love it though as it totally transforms the phone into a kiddy phone with bright icons and sounds and you can limit what icons are in the mode.
They can't get out without the pass code.
No use if you don't have kids though I guess.

Just stop using it then? Goto app manager and tap "Disable"

What's the question you're asking? My beef is with phone manufacturers that install stuff on your phone that you can't remove, thereby pointlessly using up memory space.
And the Disable button is greyed out.

You have to actively turn the Kid Mode app on. It's off by default. That's why I asked.
Kid mode is updated by the play store. So if you go to App manager, uninstall updates. Disable will become available. At least it is on mine.
You won't be able to uninstall it as its part of the , unless you root your phone. But you'll need to know what other apps are dependent on it.
I was just querying the reason for the question mark in your post (it wasn't a question) 
Everything is greyed out apart from Show Notifications (which is unchecked) and Clear Defaults of which it says there are none set. There are presumably no updates to uninstall. It is also consuming almost 70MB for no useful purpose.
I never deliberately turned it on, as you suggest has to happen - it just popped up one day blanking out my home screen.
My major gripe is with manufacturers that install stuff that is not part of the operating system without your knowledge and then don't allow you to remove it.

It IS part of the HTC firmware. If you want stock Android then a Nexus device is probably the way to go.
I am sorry I can't help with why everything is greyed out or why Kids Mode popped up all by itself. It's very strange indeed. It should only come up when you first use the handset (as part of the initial tutorial) and if you subsequently turn it on.
I'm guessing the reason you want to delete it is to free up that 70 megabytes? If so then running something like Clean Master is going to free up much more than that by emptying app caches etc.
