On a side note, after not seeing this for so many years, it brings back memories of my childhood watching this with my parents and siblings.

Not sure when this was filmed but Ken Dodd being a bit un-PC at the moment doing jokes about the Germans and goose stepping around the stage.

In that era the main military threat from Europe had changed from France to Germany, hence Doddy's slightly jingoistic jokes. Mind you , that must makes Doddy a fair age now, at least 166 years of age, looking good though.

Mike and Bernie Winters, , I've heard so much about how awful they were, and you know, in a strange way, they are even worse than I thought.
They were huge on ITV though. |

Mike and Bernie Winters had their own TV show for 8 years and were on the 1962 Royal Variety Performance. I'm afraid their act on The Good Old Days only made me cringe however, I have difficulty in understanding their massive popularity.

The story is told of their debut at the Glasgow Empire where, it was said, ''English comedians come to die quietly.''' ''The act began with Mike wandering on stage with a clarinet on which he played Exactly Like You.When Bernie made his entrance by sticking his head through the curtains...a voice from the gods shouted 'Sh*** there's two of them.'' Turned Out Nice Again, Louis Barfe,Atlantic Books 2009. |

Aw this last night, was only five when it was cancelled, so I don't recall it. Most of it was pretty dire, Mike and Bernie Winters?? surely they were third rate even then? Frankie Vaughan? couldn't sing in key. However, i like the set up, and they old fashioned sense of community it evoked. I think communal singing is a working -class tradition which only survives now in kareoke bars. Shame.

Love the communal singing, even Markus the strongman and Los Gauchos were giving it some welly at the end. Happy days indeed. |

This has its moments, but the picture quality is poor. But then it's a pretty old series.
I remember seeing it once with the inclusion of a very vibrant Roy Castle. He was a sad loss for many and particularly for his family. I still remember one of his jokes. "My grandad took (Andrews) liver salts every day and he he lived until he was ninety. When he passed away, they had to beat his liver to death with a stick!" It just appealed to my sense of humour. |

Used to love this in its heyday. Watched the 1st part because I saw the name John Bouchier in my Tv listings. Enjoyed seeing his act again and went to watch him in an old 3-2-1 show on youtube. I confess to having forgotten all about him although I was a big fan when I was in my teens and John was a tall slender handsome young man of 25. I discovered that he was coming to my local Variety Theatre but I was unable to go because I had just come out of hospital. I wrote to him telling him how disappointed I was - and guess what - he actually turned up on my doorstep with flowers and chocolates! How could I have forgotten him.

Hylda's act changed very little over the years. "I must get a little hand put on this watch" makes me laugh just as much today as when I were a lad.
As for Ken Dodd, his "don't go down the pit Grandad, there's plenty of slack in your pants" kills me every time! ![]() Loved Hylda Baker's humour but by golly she was a crabby old girl in real life!

Bernie died in 1991 and Mike in 2013

Turned Out Nice Again, Louis Barfe,Atlantic Books 2009. Morecambe and Wise are being interviewed about their lives etc when the host asks 'Eric, you and Ern have made comedy your lives and done very well, what would you have been if you hadn't been comedians?' Eric's answer: "Mike and Bernie Winters"

My goodness, a blast from the past! This was a 1976 episode.
Although I remember it from the time I was a kid in the seventies (b.1965) and used to hate it when it was on. Those Thursday nights after the nine o'clock news and then it moved to Friday nights at 8:10. I was just too young to appreciate it. Les Dawson's doing a turn at the moment. I can even see now how clever Leonard Sachs was with those words. I never would have thought that back then, it used to make me cringe. Good to see again. I believe this show ran from about 1958. What sticks in my mind was when everyone sang together "Down at the old Bull & Bush". Another couple of songs I used to love and remember on TGOD were "Sally, Sally - pride of our alley" and "My old man said follow the van"..... great stuff. Makes me feel old now even thinking about it

First time I've ever seen Mike & Bernie Winters perform.
My god. Was that their 'act' ? Jeeeeesus. I'd say it wasn't funny but I'm still working out how exactly it was meant to be funny in the first place. And was Frankie Vaughan on the pop? Or was he always like that ? (and were the heavy metal balls fake??) |

I always thought M&B Winters were aping US comedy duos like Martin and Lewis and Rowan and Martin rather than trying to rival Morcambe and Wise.
One cigarette smoking smooth straight guy and the dopey, toothy sidekick. They fell out I think and Bernie had to find his own solo career. |

I'm watching it now, the stage and everything looks so much smaller than I remembered as a little kid. Loving seeing everyone dressed up like the old tins of Quality Street
![]() The singers and dancers are still my favourite turns, wonder what they're up to now? |

I met him once when I was recording a charity do where he was speaking and presenting prizes, and he was charm itself, a very nice bloke. This was shortly after his health problems started and although he bought me a drink at the bar, he stuck to water. |
