For me, Santer restored the show and got me watching again. He had a lot of rubble to remove.

I agree, he was definitely the best.

I used to say so at the time. Almost no one else was singing his praises, he was underrated.

Maybe not the best, but definitely one of them.

EastEnders was near perfect back in 2007-2010.

We had epic storylines, a very strong cast and some fantastic performances. It was all done very smoothly and despite a few soaps, it was a great era for the show. EE was without a doubt the best soap back then.

Diederick Santer was okay but he was nowhere near as good as various producers who came before him, like John Yorke, Julia Smith, Mike Gibbon or Matthew Robinson. John Yorke was easily the best producer Eastenders has had.

He was great, but he was not better than John Yorke. EE from 99-02 was at its peak. Actually it had a pretty good run from 1996 until mid 2003 or so. That period of 7 years were brilliant under different EPs.

Santer was very good, but for many EE fans who were around from day one will tell you there is only one producer and that was the wonderful Julia Smith. She understood the show better than anybody apart from co creator Tony Holland. It was their baby. Julia and Tony will be turning in their graves if they could see the dogs dinner and mess it is in now! Its enough to make older EE fans like myself weep!!!!!!!!!

It's hard to comment on past EP's like Julia Smith and others when I wasn't born to see their work. So i pretty much base my opinions from Matthew Robinson onwards.

Absolutely. I wonder how long these people who claim Santer's EE was the best have actually been watching for.

Diedrick Santer

Probably in that order, from best to worst. Hutchinson was there far too briefly to have much of an impact and I can't decide who was more terrible between Kirkwood and Newman.

The top two were pretty good; everyone else has been varying shades of crap, IMO. 21st century EastEnders has overall been pretty shaky, in other words.

Santer and Dtc pretty much have a similar body of work on Eastenders. I think they are very good overall yet flawed like anyone else..I also remember Santer being crucified on here too. Some things never change eh?

Hutchinson may of been there a short time but I still think she was rubbish. She gave us The Allens and the Moon Brothers. They were crap forgettable characters and had rubbish storylines.

As for Kirkwood, I loved his reign. I really did. His axings could not of been more spot on. His only downfall was the creation of the young characters like Zsa Zsa, Fatboy, Mercy and Leon. Two of which were gone within less than a year. But even I enjoyed the focus on the young characters anyway. Plus many other things. I never understood why he gets a hard time on here.

2004 was EastEnders worst year ever.

Diederick Santer pretty much saved EastEnders after years of mediocrity.

It was the cock up of the baby swap sensation. Either stick to it or don't run with such a s/l. EE hasn't recovered since then with viewers. I know a lot of people deserted the show after that. He was too sensationalist for me like Santer's protege we are seeing now in full swing.

To be fair, they got such a battering from the press, it was wise for the storyline to be cut short. I still think it's one of the best storylines EE has done. It was so dark and different. Plus it was well written and well acted. But i am glad It never went on to xmas. It worked as a short storyline. I think planning it as a 12 month story was a silly idea anyway.

Wasn't it meant to run for years? I remember Shane Ritchie blurting about it.
I agree I think they should've had the balls to continue as there was a complete s/l overhaul after that.

He was too hasty an EP like Pat's exit too. Unnecessary.

I did like Whitney's CSE s/l and Billie's death tbf.

Yes, it was meant to climax at xmas. We got the masoods/yusef drama instead, which I loved personally.

I can't disagree about Pat. That was simpy wrong in every way. I think that action alone has blacklisted him among fans.
