Just seen it, had about half an hours worth of "great moments" but it really did drag along the way.
SMALL SPOILERS... I thought Hardy was excellent though, and to be honest I think his character was right to try to put Leo's out of his misery early on. Hardys character wasn't the total baddie the movie tried to make him. It was Leo's selfishness that led to Hardy having to do some regretful things. |

"And you thought watching it was an ordeal - I had to make the damned thing!"
Much hilarity at the Academy as Leo wins the gong for huffing and puffing his way through Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest (and beautifully shot) study of the male ego. Like Birdman it strives for profoundity but is a little too self-absorbed, and soon becomes heavy-going without much reward. Perhaps that's the point, but other films have projected a viewer/protagonist 'experience' somewhat better (Gravity, say). Still, it seems to have found an audience. For the bearded neo-alpha male who only ever wears outdoor clothing brands, it's the film of their dreams. 6/10 |

Went to see the movie on a larger screen as it was recommended by one BBC film critic and had to pay extra for that. Disappointing movie. No tension, no viewer engagement and off course very little action.
All we see is Leo surviving in the harsh environment with little talking. It would have made a lovely Richard Attenborough 'Planet Earth' type documentary but a movie with a wide critical acclaim and massive budget of over $100 million, probably half eaten by its Superstar Leo, is very disappointing indeed. What a waste of my money

I thought it was quite dull to be honest - don't know why everyone was raving about it.
Too much spittle in it for my liking. Eurgh. |

Just saw it today and enjoyed it. Did Leo have more than 30 lines though?!!
Very epic and I can see why Leo is the favourite for the Oscar. |

I'm surprised to read so many found it dragged, I was pretty invested throughout the movie. I went in totally blind though, even googling what 'revenant' meant during the opening titles.
Having turned off Wolf of Wall Street about 50 mins from the end because it just seemed to hit a wall (as did I), I didn't get that feeling once in this. It didn't even occur to me that Leo didn't have many lines, I was totally with him the whole way thanks to his (almost) purely emotive portrayal of Hugh Glass. The bear scene is incredibly visceral, I winced all the way through, truly horrifying. Also was left opened mouthed after the brief horse chase... |

The film seems to have polarized opinion, I've been looking forward to this for a while. Definitely sounds like a cinema movie.

Well Gallus I'd like to see it at the pictures in big screen.
I would enjoy it then walk out after the Frenchie reaches the fort. (Not a spoiler) 'cos then it jumps the shark. A good film followed by a shite film. |

I like a good adventure movie, I believe this is a loose remake of Man In The Wilderness. I would like to see a remake of that old Spencer Tracy film, North West Passage, a proper sprawling adventure.

I felt that the movie dragged too. I had to go to the toilet during the film and I was going to wait until the end, since I felt like it had been on for a long time. I couldn't keep waiting though and when I got back, the film was probably on for another 40 minutes. It felt like a very long film to me.
Not bad though. I didn't realise that Fitzgerald was played by Tom Hardy until the end, even though I had re-watched Legend the night before. He completely transformed himself, although he was hard to understand at times. Am I the only one here who laughed during the bear scene? It was a great scene, but I couldn't help but laugh at how much the bear beat the shit out of Leo I'm really not sure why I reacted like that. My friend was finding it hard to watch (due to the brutality) and I was cracking up.

I agree that the cinematogrophy was jaw-dropping and the fact that it was shot in natural lighting is admirable. I thought Di Caprio did an amazing job, even if he only spoke around 10 words the whole film. The only gripe I have is that it's a 2 hour 40 odd minute film and I just don't feel like the story went anywhere. Especially with the Pawnee people and the search for the girl, that was just lost in the end.
I think it was amazing to watch though and certainly if you like a pretty film, it's worth a watch. |

I enjoyed it. I can see why people felt it dragged as there were periods when nothing was really happening but it kept my interest. It's like those TV programmes that divide opinion some that don't have much going on still manage to keep you watching while others don't. I can't work out why that is apart from maybe the dialogue is crap and people standing staring into space for too long and too often with a face full of angst
![]() There were a few plot holes for me though, or maybe me not fully understanding. And things I couldn't work out:

Edited I've just read a review which says:

Watched it tonight and I absolutely loved it. I'll be surprised if Leonardo doesn't get an Oscar for this. He was fantastic. That bear scene was incredible.
As for that poor horse.

Rumours are that the Oscars are going to throw a curve ball and Leo will NOT win ! Would be quite a story if it turns out to be true, after being nailed on for so long.

Didn't think that this was going to be my type of film but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I used to love Brian De Palma's long takes without cuts and this film is very reminiscent of that. The bear scene in particular must have been a logistical nightmare. |
