More apposite would be why Aliona wasn't wearing matching grungy clothes befitting her role as an Eastern European cleaner on minimum wage?

I've not seen it and I could work out it was a costume to match the musical, just like every other contest and professional were dressed to match theirs.

Thank the lord that the guitar and piano weren't animated. I can just see Aliona's scowl at the suggestion

I thought it was a 'bum' choice.

It was dreadful and spoilt all his lines. Also, Jay doesn't look good in casual - he just looks messy. A great shame.

The award winning choreographer and musical director Matthew Bourne doesn't agree with you:

Matthew Bourne ‏@Mattbourne1 1h1 hour ago Islington, London
Had a bit of a tear along with @DarceyOfficial with @JayMcGuiness & @AlionaOnline #rhumba @bbcstrictly

Romantic and touching ❤️

It wasn't lost on me why he was dressed in jeans, I got that it was the character, as I am sure most of us did. I'm sure we can all put two and two together.

But I think it still didn't feel right and like a dance performance dressed like that, more like practise.

Cannot believe that people are saying about his clothes....all the other celebs wore clothes that fitted there musical dances...and that is exactly what Jay did.

jeez, i'm just saying he looked a mess. i have genuinely seen street buskers better dressed than that. its not the oscars, no need for any of them to resort of method acting. i j mean, nancy was a prostitute but i don't see you demanding she leave her knickers off. and everyone in les mis had consumption but i don't actually expect them to cough their guts up on stage. do you?

Loved when Len said he was glad Jay dressed up for the night I thought exactly the same. I know, it was for the role, but it was funny. Not a big fan of rumba, but I loved this one. As for the story I wonder how long before somebody says it was art imitating life, oops somebody just did

So if you were watching Oklahoma or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers you'd expect them all to be wearing top hat and tails?

I think that's what made it stand out from the others. It was a refreshing change from the over the top costumes and props... the dance spoke for itself, and having seen the musical, I thought it was excellent.

Nor wear a glittery frock like they gave Helen either

As they say, a strictly version of it. Like Helen wasn't in rags and Kellie was in a dressed up version of Nancy.

No, but a rhumba is not danced in jeans and a plaid shirt.

His costume had a lot in common with the musical that inspired it and his rumba in general.

It was stunning - with beautiful lines and plenty of rhumba content - Considering the outfit he had to wear (in line with the theme and musical) - just imagine how it would have looked if it was not Musicals Week and therefore tied to the theme of the Musical.
I guess Matthew Bourne sees the dancer in Jay.

The Rumba can be danced in what you like....the clothes fitted the musical they were dancing to.

I imagine a midi skirt and boots were not conducive to her footwork
