... cry if you like Darcy but that was not good at all. At one point I thought if an audience member breathed too heavily he would fall over.

I still noticed that he was very stiff.

I thought it was fabulous, to me he looked like a professional dancer doing the rhumba, for such a difficult dance he was brilliant.

I would only agree that he was overmarked last night

Oh he was so fantastic.

Fluid, lyrical. The story telling through movement of the body was gorgeous. A beautiful Rumba.

Bravo Aliona for the choreography. Lots in there to allow Jay to shine, and having seen the film, the dance pretty much told the whole story of the film in 90 seconds.

It truly was perfection,

Oh and I was as moved as Darcey. I also had tears in my eyes.

Completely agree

Strange how one dance can inspire such polarised views. I loved it but thought it was overmarked.

Stiff or flaccid - which one is it then?

Maybe the contrasting Jay threads should be merged into one mega 'Let's post baseless criticisms of Jay' thread?

So would I be if I had Aliona gyrating all over me.

Is this about the rumba or porn you watched last night?

it wasn't a bad effort for a rumba from a male celebrity, but three 10's? No way.

I actually thought his poise in his rumba was lacking in strength. So neither flaccid or stiff but missing an element which resulted in it looking a bit apologetic. I also thought he didn't finish his steps very well, meaning the transitions were blurred, and so lacking rhythmic expression. His rumba was a good attempt at the dance and sometimes he had some nice arm movements, but he was still well overmarked in my view.

My criticisms are not baseless. I have been dancing latin and ballroom for a while now and am about to take my teaching exams.

He had 4 days to learn and nail this dance! I'm pretty certain Jay has never attempted a rumba before. For an amateur, It was a fantastic dance. And finally, a rumba I didn't have to watch from behind a cushion!

I have to dispute that point. I didn't see a Hoover anywhere. If Georgia could have a teapot, Jay should have had a Hoover.

(Because life size household objects made animate are truly the difference between a merely good and a great dance, obviously.)

This is the first time I've seen someone in either of the topics I was referencing add a bit of depth to their opinion so no, your opinion is not at all baseless.

And I'm not saying Jay isn't stiff or flaccid *insert juvenile sniggering here*, I just want to hear why people have these opinions otherwise it comes across as sour grapes.

Yes, I fully accept that. So not undervaluing what he produced, which was good. Just that in relative terms I don't think I would have put him top.

I think you are Dyson with death, pointing out on here one of the more obvious reasons why that dance wasn't the interpretive masterpiece the judges and others made it out to be.

I wouldn't have given him a 10 because although he put over the emotion beautifully, it wasn't as sinuous as it might have been.

No problem. I know that comments are often sweeping. I do rate Jay as a dancer, but I think some critical feedback from the judges is actually useful and wouldn't stop him from getting to the final.

There I was believing my own eyes, the judges, Matthew Bourne, Robin Windsor.........and so on, what a beautiful dance it was. Thank you DS posters for putting me right

I can't help it, I operate in a moral vacuum.

For sure. I don't have a latin/ballroom background so I enjoy reading people's technical observations beyond someone being 'stiff' or 'flaccid' (cause I'm pretty sure you can't be both...)

Thanks again for your commentary

Well it makes a change from all the previous weeks when he was seriously under-marked!

I'm biased as a loathe the rhumba so my expectations are so low when the dance starts it's never ever going to wow me. That said it wasn't as awful as it could have been.

For one thing his less than expressive face is a good thing in most dances (I don't want to see too much emoting ... Helen I'm looking at you!) but especially the rhumba. That was a plus.

But I admit it wasn't my favourite dance of the night. I didn't like their costumes as those tight trousers that seem to be fashionable with certain men are just ugly and pink and orange are two colours that clash so that distracted me.

That said I haven't seen the particular musical the song was from so maybe that helps. He should still be in the show though. He's a lovely dancer and needs to be in the final. Just please don't dance that dance again.

I thought Jay was fantastic, the rumba is a very difficult dance and divides people on what type they want, a contemporary and passionate one or a romantic and sweet one. I liked Jay's rumba and I THOUGHT IT DID deserve the marks it got, we all have to remember, that these people are not proffessionals and we have to give them some credit.
