I've tried and tried... and I just can't replicate the precise sound.

So frustrating.

Well, some people are naturals and some need lots of training...

Also delighted that we no longer have Bruce's excruciating and time-consuming introductions.

Did the OP poster not think for one single moment that the reason for Tess's emphatic name pronounciation MIGHT ACTUALLY BE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PRODUCTION PEOPLE wearing headphones and waiting for cues through the audience applause, whistling etc etc ;
- for Dave Arch to fix the tempo in his head before giving the beat to the band,
- for the scene shifters and stage managers to finish up and get out of the way,
- for the dancers themselves to take a deep breath to get ready to begin,
- to the cameramen to get into the right position.

Honestly, this is a live broadcast show, and some of you people just think about yourselves in your own living room, as though nothing else mattered. Talk about navel-gazing.

Weirdly (because we're talking about a cartoon here!) I really had the hots for Velma (and whoever it was that played her in the movies not the actress but the character )

There's emphatic name pronunciation and then there's downright mispronunciation - Oh-la instead of O-la, Dur-um instead of Derham etc.

And actually, a TV show isn't produced in the way you think it is produced. The production team give the cues to Tess, not the other way round.

I think you are to be admired for your candour.

Sorry, I'm too used to live stage shows and performing in live concerts. Getting everybody onstage in a live or semi-live show can involve a lot of shouting and pushing offstage and off camera. Miss hearing a name? You've missed your cue.

Obviously I should go and do more TV work to learn the difference..

Well I suppose it makes a change from claiming her general pronunciation is inauthentic...though in every case the OP has raised I'd suggest she is pronouncing the surnames correctly.

To be fair to her, I don't feel she has been mispronouncing the names in the examples I gave.... it's more just that she delivers their names as if she's voicing the Teletubbies.

EDIT: Having just read another couple of comments, it's apparent that one or two of you who are responding have completely failed to grasp what point I was making in the OP.

I didn't suggest that she has been mispronouncing their names. That is not what I said.

Speaking as the stage manager for my local amateur musical theatre company I can assure you that there is no shouting / pushing / shoving involved in getting people on or off stage. I can't help but feel the audience would find that a tad distracting.

I hear no vocal or tonal over emphasis either, even if you do. And inflection is part of pronunciation, isn't it?

I hope TPTB are monitoring this thread so we can have a Scooby doo themed week next series.

I think you're overthinking things.

I made a simple observation about Tess announcing the pro dancers names in a strange singy-songy manner and all of a sudden, it's all about missed cues, Dave Arch's tempo fixation and camera angles....

Bloody hell.

Me neither. I am more than happy to listen to Tess than Bruce.

Listen out for how she says "Kevin Clifton", "Gleb Savchenko" and "Giovanni Pernice" next week. It's the sing-songiness about it.

It's there.

If we've gotta have "theme weeks" that would get my vote

The inconsistencies are when she forgets to use her affected "Northern vowel sounds."

I don't think anyone hates her, as someone else has suggested.
She's harmless, bares nobody any ill will and is bland enough not to be too irritatingly noticeable as was "the old codger."
