My Chloé is 20 months old, has the best cat food and snacks money can buy and a good variety at that. She eats all her food but she decides to snack further - on the damn CHRISTMAS TREE. She loves going underneath it and playing, but she chews and eats the green stuff. I keep pulling her out from underneath it but she goes and keeps doing it. I've caught her vomitting twice because of it. Vomit plus lots of bits of undigested green tree stuff. It's a faux tree.

I don't mind so much that she jumps and plays on it, sometimes knocking the odd bauble off here and there, as the bright colours, sparkle and shining lights make it an irresistible toy for her. And who am I to spoil her fun?

But the eating? It's gotta stop! So please - how do I make Chloé stop it??

I believe the needles are reasonably poisonous, so I'd stop her if I were you. Could you put a chicken-wire "collar" around the base of the tree, about 18 inches tall? Or could you box the tree into a corner of the room by putting it behind a chair? Or spray the lower branches of the tree with a cat repellant (usually used outside)?

There are bitter tasting sprays available that might put her off.

It could be a sign cat (especially if long haired) needs grooming. When they wash themselves, they get fur trapped in their throat, and they will eat long grass or something like that to actually induce vomiting. Our cats did it all the time.

I think it's a fake tree. Still not great, but it's one of those weird things where fake needles are better than natural. The natural ones as you say can be poisonous and are much firmer and can cause problems with how sharp they are.

Thanks people. I think I'll get one of those sprays. My Chloé is such a silly girl 😆

If you have lights on your tree please be careful not to leave your cat unsupervised around the tree.

Someone posted on facebook a few days ago that they went out shopping and came home to the awful sight of their 15 week old kitten hanging from their Christmas tree.

The kitten had climbed the tree and somehow managed to hang himself on the lights. So tragic.

She posted it on facebook and asked everyone to share it to make people aware of the dangers of leaving cats alone with Christmas trees.
