One of my favourite days TV in the year! 3Sat has being doing this for many years now, and there are usually some cracking concerts. This years line up looks particularly good, with Jeff Lynne, Dire Straits, Springsteen, Sinatra... fantastic!

Worth buying the German SAT receiver for on it's own!

No it's not. It works with English or Chinese satellite receivers. Even a sky box can be made to receive it with the right dish.

Obviously if you connect any satellite receiver to a dish and LNB pointing in the right direction you will be able to receive 3 Sat, and the whole range of channels from the main Astra array, but how is it possible to receive two different satellite signals through the one receiver? Is it a case of unplugging the Sky feed and plugging in the European feed?

Actually, I guess my cheap German box (cost € 35.00 about 5 years ago) was probably made in China - most things are these days!

Most receivers (not Sky boxes) have the ability to operate a switching box near the dish. The switch (DiSEqC) is connected to 2 up to 8 lnbs aligned on different satellites and outputs down one cable to the receiver. The receiver sends data signals up the cable instructing the switch which lnb to connect to.

So, as I thought, if I'm using a Sky box, then I would need a 2nd box for any other satellites I wanted to add. That being the case € 35.00 was indeed a good deal!

... and if you like oldies, you might enjoy the daily slot of "Hitparade" and "Disco" on ZDFkultur (from 18:45 cet, repeated next morning around 8:15).

Hitparade features German schlager, including many cover versions of international hits. Current episodes are from 1982, with a lot of Neue Deutsche Welle (Nena, Falco, etc.). A new run of repeats will start on 12th January with episode 28 from November 1971. (Tapes of the first episodes were deleted in the 70s).

Disco (1971-82) features a mix of some German and a lot of international hits, with painfully boring sketches in between. Current episodes are from 1980. A new run will start on 10th January with episode 1.

Both shows have ben repeated again and again over the last couple of years and I've always ignored them. But since ZDFkultur will be closed down at some point in 2016 or 2017, this might be one of the last chances to see them, so I've started to record selected songs and episodes now.

On the subject of German TV traditions, don't forget "Dinner for One" with Freddie Frinton playing (brilliantly) a drunk butler. It's all in English, and last about 15 minutes.

Same procedure as last year.......same procedure as every year!

This has been decided by the governments of the 16 German states: ZDFkultur and EinsPlus will be closed down in order to secure the funding of a new ARD/ZDF youth channel which will be online-only.

But nobody knows exactly when this will happen. German Wikipedia even says it won't be before 2018.
