Dances in Previous Series

Did anyone see ITT on Monday night when they showed shots of Darren Bennett and his wife Lilia Kopylova when they were competing in SCD years ago? The dances looked so tame and slow compared to the dances in this series. Even the sainted Jill Halfpenny's jive looked bland. I don't know how those dances would have been marked this series.

They'd have scored highly as, in earlier series', the routines were generally much better in terms of technicality and quality.
Most of my favourite dances are from the first few years of SCD before it got more "Burn the Floor" ified.

Mine too. I do think there's been Jives as good if not better since Jill and Darren's, but it was the benchmark against which everything was measured and rightly so for the WOW factor that came with it. That doesn't come over if you didn't see it at the time. Watching it out of that contex means too much is missing. I think that applies to so many dances, you really did 'have to be there'!

The scoring was SO different in the early series too and 10s were like gold dust back then.

There's a reason it's take over a decade for a jive (Jay's) to come close to the wow factor that Jill produced. It's not just about technical brilliance or performance, but those things and heart and soul coming together. Jill brought pure joy to her jive that no one else has matched since. As said above, you had to watch it live, the feeling can't be replicated by watching a YouTube video.
