The first time I bought an Asda store-baked wholemeal loaf I thought it was wonderful. Nothing fancy, just a very satisfying taste and texture. Since then, although they look okay on the outside, once opened they begin to collapse in on themselves, folding along one side until they become almost V-shaped. When cutting a slice for toast, the bread knife is coated with sticky dough. I assume this is due to incompetent baking – at a guess, because the temperature was too high, browning the outside and leaving the inside almost uncooked.

This is at the Grantham store, which is quite a distance from where I live, but have reason to visit occasionally. Is it just at this store, or has anybody found this anywhere else?

My experience of Asda's in-store baked wholemeal is poor. The physical texture is just spongy. They look like they have a crust but it'sa sham - if you feel a loaf there's no resistance at all. Awful. I've looked at their apparently wide selection trying to find one with some crust and resistance but they're all soft. Howdo theykeep theirshape?

They are very difficult to slice at home as they're just soft and spongy, so the loaf just squashes out of shape as you try to cut it. It's very frustrating and more likely to make me cut myself. I try to get them to slice it but several times I haven't found anyone around.

Even my small-ish local Co-op (no slicing service) or Sainsburys are very much better, producing a proper crusty loaf with good texture.

The bread on our local ASDA bakery counter is almost universally terrible - doughy, almost like it is undercooked, with poor crusts. The only items they seem to get right(ish) are the bagels.

We have a Lidl and a Sainsbury's down the road and both bakery counters are infinitely better.

I notice how Asda granary bread is not particularly crusty. I miss rye bread, which Asda stopped doing I think about 4 or 5 years ago now.

Asda wholemeal has always been undercooked when I've bought it in the past. I find Morrisons does the best store cooked bread out of all the supermarkets. Their wheat and spelt loaf is particularly nice, but pricey at about £1.75.

The trouble is that on the very rare occasions that I've bought a competently baked one, it has actually had a very satisfying taste. You can sometimes get a couple of slices off it when it's first opened, but after that it's like trying to cut a blancmange.
