It's tucked away but this classic Four part DW story staring Tom Baker and introducing Leela is on Monday 28th - parts 1/2 and 3/4 Tuesday.

Remember to set the recorders and TiVo.

First shown NYD 1977, has Tom Bakers face carved into a mountain a bit like Mount Rushmore.

I remember watching this and wondering why the Doctor was swanning around the galaxy rather than going back to collect Sarah Jane.

I did eventually grow to be quite fond of Leela, but six-year-old me was very confused why the Doctor wasn't heading straight back to earth after finishing all that nasty business on Gallifrey.

"Stay back, or I'll kill him with this deadly jellybaby!"

Might make my little brother watch this one, he loves what he's seen of Tom Baker. Leela is an underrated companion and despite the tensions from Tom towards her they made a great team on-screen.

Leela was great, a good change from Sarah Jane, but starts off trying to kill the Doctor.

In fact she always was trying to kill someone.

It was Louise Jamersons stepping stone to Bergerac and EastEnders.

Those were the days when the Doctor let his companions go and seemingly forgot about them immediately.

He didn't weep every time they were mentioned, or cut himself off from everyone and go and live on a cloud, or allow himself to be tortured for 4 billion years for them.

How times change!

I know. Remember when Tegan left? The poor woman was in shock after a particularly harrowing adventure and said she wanted to stay on earth. And the Doctor couldn't jump in the TARDIS and dematerialise quickly enough. She'd been with him for years but he didn't give her a second to change her mind.

You know, in retrospect, he was a bit of a heartless b***ard back then, wasn't he?

Didn't they repeat FoE some time ago on BBC Four, or am I imagining that?

Edit: Ah, I think I'm getting mixed up with Hand of Fear (as a tribute to Lis Sladen)

Can you IMAGINE the stick Moff would get these days if he wrote something similar

Has the BBC said why they are showing this serial? I was amazed that they didn't show any Classic serials during 2013, other than the very first one.

Will you not get a load of extras on the DVD version?

No fanfare, just picked it up from the Christmas Radio Times.

Well, it was Tegan. I was quite glad to see her go, too. (Sorry, Tegan fans )

They wanted a story transmitted Xmas / New Year from the classic era for some reason.

Think he bought it on the new BBC Store. They don't have the extras, just the story.

I don't think there will be too much doctor who on BBC Four as the beeb will want to sell more shows to the horror channel to air

But a good way to advertise old who, if you show some limited series it may inspire demand for more and viewers seek it out.

I think it's all part of BBC Four's Children's TV lookback. They're also showing Grange Hill and Play School as well at some point.

And if anyone wants to start an argument about whether Who is a children's programme or not, talk to the BBC Four Controller. Not me.
